What TASS is and who qualifies

TASS , the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, supports athletes who sit at the top of the talent pathway in their sport. You do not apply to TASS directly. Instead, your sport's National Governing Body (NGB) decides when you have reached that point and puts you forward for support, so building a relationship with your NGB's talent pathway staff matters more than filling in a TASS application form yourself.

Since 2004, TASS has supported more than 8,000 athletes across 73 sports and disciplines, including 123 athletes who competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, 60 of whom won a medal. The scheme reports a roughly equal split between female and male athletes supported.

What support TASS provides

Once nominated, athletes get access to a package of services designed to support both performance and daily life, including strength and conditioning coaching, physiotherapy, personalized performance nutrition, and sport psychology support for goal-setting, confidence, and focus. A dedicated medical scheme gives fast-track access to treatment for sports injuries and illness, reducing the time athletes lose to slow diagnosis or long waiting lists elsewhere.

TASS also funds mental health support: free, confidential counselling is available 24/7, with up to 12 therapy sessions a year per issue. This support runs through more than 40 delivery sites across the UK, with practitioners helping schedule appointments around your education, training, and competition calendar rather than on a fixed weekly slot.

How TASS works alongside university

Because delivery sites sit close to major training hubs and universities, TASS support fits around your term dates rather than replacing them. If your NGB ends your TASS support, whether through injury, a change in form, or a shift in selection priorities, TASS applies a three-month transition period rather than cutting support off immediately, giving you time to adjust your training and study plans.

TASS support does not replace a place at university or cover tuition fees. It sits alongside your normal student finance and any university sport scholarship, filling the sport science and medical gap that academic funding does not usually cover.

TASS compared with UK Sport funding

TASS focuses on athletes working their way up the talent pathway, generally at junior, under-23, or emerging senior level. Funding closer to the Olympic and Paralympic podium, through UK Sport's National Lottery-funded programs, targets athletes already competing at the top of world sport, with different eligibility and a different funding structure. Ask your NGB where you currently sit on this pathway, since the right source of support changes as your results and ranking improve.

University sport scholarships

Alongside TASS, many UK universities run their own sport scholarship schemes for talented athletes, particularly those affiliated with British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition. These typically bundle a cash bursary with access to strength and conditioning or sport science support, priority access to training facilities, and flexible exam or assessment arrangements for students who need to travel for competition.

Scholarship amounts, sports covered, and eligibility criteria differ significantly between universities, so check each university's dedicated sport scholarship page directly and compare more than one offer before you accept a place, since the academic flexibility on offer can matter as much as the money. Some universities also offer a lower tier of support, such as free gym access or physiotherapy discounts, for athletes who do not meet full scholarship criteria but still compete regularly.

Choosing a university as a talented athlete

Where you study affects your access to training facilities, coaches in your sport, and how far you travel to reach a TASS delivery site or your NGB's main training base. Before you accept an offer, ask each university how many other athletes in your sport currently study there, whether the sport scholarship office coordinates directly with your NGB, and how the university handles a clash between a mandatory assessment and a selection event you cannot miss.

Visiting a campus during term time, rather than only on an open day, gives a better sense of how the timetable actually works around training sessions, since open days rarely show a full week of academic and sporting commitments running at once.

Talk to current student athletes on the course you are considering if you can arrange it, since they can tell you honestly how often the flexible arrangements on paper hold up in practice during a demanding competition season.
