TL;DR

A UK Student visa needs about £1,529 a month if you study in London or £1,171 outside London, while an Australian Student visa needs AUD $29,710 as your yearly living cost figure. The UK Graduate visa gives you 2 years to work after most degrees (18 months for 2027 applications), Australia's 485 visa gives 2 to 3 years depending on your degree level and pathway.

  • 💰 UK: up to 9 months of maintenance funds, held for 28 days straight

  • 💰 Australia: AUD $29,710 minimum, effective from 10 May 2024

  • 🏠 UK bans dependants on most taught master's courses since 1 January 2024

  • ⏰ UK Graduate Route: 2 years, 3 for a PhD, dropping to 18 months from 2027

  • ⏰ Australia 485 visa: 2 years bachelor's/master's coursework, 3 years master's research/doctorate

UK or Australia: Comparing Visa Rules and Post-Study Work for Malaysian and Singaporean Students

Financial requirement: UK versus Australia

Both the UK and Australia ask you to show enough money for your studies and living costs before granting a Student visa. The amount and the proof method differ.

For a UK Student visa, you show tuition fees for your first year, already paid or held alongside your funds, plus maintenance funds. Maintenance funds are £1,529 a month if your course is in London, or £1,171 a month outside London , for up to 9 months. In practice that adds up to £13,761 in London or £10,539 outside it, on top of your tuition. You hold this amount for a continuous 28 day period, and the last day of that period falls within 31 days of your application date.

For an Australian Student visa (subclass 500) , the Department of Home Affairs sets a financial capacity threshold of AUD $29,710 a year for the applicant, a figure that took effect from 10 May 2024. This covers living costs only, on top of tuition and travel costs you also need to show.

Bringing your partner or children

The UK closed dependant visas to most postgraduate students from 1 January 2024. Only two groups still bring a partner or children: government-sponsored students on courses over 6 months, and research students on a PhD or other doctorate, or another research-based higher degree, on a course of 9 months or longer. Plan a taught master's in the UK and you study alone.

Australia does not run a blanket ban like this. You include a partner and dependent children on your Student visa application, but you show enough money to support them too, and each family member goes through separate health and character checks. Build this into your financial planning before you apply.

Course confirmation before you apply

Your institution issues the paperwork you attach to the visa application. In the UK this is a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number from your sponsor, valid for 6 months. In Australia it is a CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) from your provider, uploaded through ImmiAccount. Neither replaces the financial evidence above, you need both the enrolment document and the money proof in the same application.

Post-study work: Graduate Route versus the 485 visa

Once you finish your degree, both countries let you stay and work without a job offer tied to your visa.

The UK Graduate visa lasts 2 years for a bachelor's or master's graduate, and 3 years for a PhD, if you apply on or before 31 December 2026. Apply from 1 January 2027 and the standard length drops to 18 months. You cannot extend the Graduate visa, so you switch to a work visa such as the Skilled Worker route before it ends.

Australia's subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa runs through the Post-Higher Education Work stream for degree holders: 2 years for a bachelor's or master's by coursework, 3 years for a master's by research or a doctorate. From 1 July 2024, you need to be under 35 when you apply, and the stream that used to sit under the old Graduate Work stream now covers only vocational graduates, renamed the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.

Steps to take before you compare fees

Before you weigh the numbers above, confirm your course length in months with your target university, since UK maintenance funds are capped at showing 9 months even for a 3 year degree, and check whether your provider holds a UK Student visa sponsor licence or CRICOS registration in Australia. A visa application against a non-licenced or unregistered provider gets refused regardless of how strong your financial evidence looks.

Malaysian and Singaporean applicants both apply through the same visa categories as any other nationality. Neither the UK nor Australia runs a separate fast-track lane for either passport in the current student visa system, so budget the same processing time and document list a student from any other ASEAN country faces.

Which one fits you

Pick the UK if you want a defined 2 year runway after most degrees and you apply without a spouse or young children. Pick Australia if you study a master's or PhD and want a longer post-study window, or need to bring family and do not want a UK-style ban to rule that out. Confirm the current financial figures directly on the Home Affairs and gov.uk pages before you apply, since both adjust these thresholds most years.
