When to apply to UNISA
The University of South Africa runs distance and online learning at scale, and its calendar works differently from a contact university. Most new students apply during the main academic year intake, which opens around August and closes in October the year before classes start. For the 2026 academic year, applications opened on 18 August 2025 and closed on 10 October 2025, according to FundiConnect .
UNISA also runs a smaller Semester 2 application window for qualifications that admit students mid-year. This typically opens in mid-April and closes in early May, ahead of the July intake. Check the official UNISA site each year for exact dates, since they shift by a few weeks between years.
Apply through myUnisa
Apply online, never in person or by post. First-time applicants create a myUnisa profile, select "first-time applicants," and complete the online application form with your qualification choice, ID number, and academic history.
Upload the documents the system asks for: certified copies of your ID document, your Grade 12 or equivalent qualification, and any prior tertiary academic records you hold. Keep certifications dated within the past few months, since UNISA rejects outdated certified copies.
You receive a student number once your application is captured. Use this number for every future interaction with UNISA, including registration, fee queries, and exam admission.
Admission does not mean registration
An admission letter only confirms your space on a qualification. You still register for individual modules each semester or year, and you pay module fees at registration. Miss registration and your admission does not carry over automatically to the next cycle.
Registration deadlines by module type
UNISA splits modules into semester modules, with one exam sitting finished within a semester, and year modules, spread across the full year with an exam at year end. Deadlines differ for each, and missing one means waiting for the next available intake.
| Module type | 2026 registration closes |
|---|---|
| Semester modules (undergraduate, honours, postgraduate diploma) | 20 February 2026 |
| Year modules (undergraduate) | 20 March 2026 |
| Year modules (honours and postgraduate diploma) | 31 March 2026 |

Documents to keep ready
Certified copy of your ID document or passport
Certified copies of your Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
Certified copies of any diplomas or degrees, for postgraduate applications
Proof of payment for the application fee, where one applies to your qualification
Returning students and outstanding debt
If you already studied at UNISA and carry a balance, you cannot register for a new academic year until you clear it or apply for an Acknowledgement of Debt (AOD). The AOD lets you commit to a payment plan while keeping your registration active. Applications open online each year through myUnisa. The 2026 AOD window opened alongside the main UNISA announcement .
Common mistakes that delay applications
Uploading uncertified or expired certified copies of documents
Applying after the closing date, since UNISA does not accept late applications for most qualifications
Choosing a qualification code you do not meet the minimum requirements for
Forgetting to pay the registration fee, which blocks module registration even after admission
If you are rejected or placed on a waiting list
Some high-demand qualifications, particularly in health sciences and postgraduate programs, close early or run selection processes. Check your application status on myUnisa rather than waiting for an email, and consider an alternative qualification code if your first choice is full.
After you register
Once registration is confirmed, activate your myLife student email and log in to myUnisa to access your module sites, tutorial letters, and assignment schedule. Set up email and SMS notifications so you do not miss assignment or exam announcements, since UNISA sends most updates electronically rather than by post.
What you can study by distance
UNISA offers qualifications across almost every field, from short courses and higher certificates through diplomas, bachelor's degrees, honours, master's, and doctoral programs. Popular undergraduate fields include commerce, education, law, humanities, and the sciences, alongside professional programs in accounting and public administration. Check the specific qualification page on the UNISA site for which modules it requires and whether it accepts new intakes for the year you plan to start.
Applying from outside South Africa
UNISA enrolls thousands of students living elsewhere in Africa who never relocate to South Africa, since distance study does not require a study visa. If your Grade 12 or equivalent qualification comes from outside South Africa, get it evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before or during your application, since UNISA uses this evaluation to confirm your qualification matches its entry requirements. Budget extra time for this step, since SAQA evaluation adds weeks to your application timeline.
Paying your registration fees
UNISA requires a minimum payment at registration before it activates your module access, even if you plan to pay the remaining balance later in the term. Pay through EFT, at a bank, or through the payment options myUnisa lists, and use your student number as the payment reference every time, since payments without the correct reference can take weeks to reflect on your account.
Where to check the exact dates each year
UNISA updates its application and registration dates on its official calendar each year, and the exact opening and closing dates shift by a few weeks depending on the academic year. Bookmark the UNISA registration page and check it at the start of each application season rather than relying on figures from a previous year, since South African distance enrollment moves fast and UNISA closes popular qualifications early some years.
