What Universitaly does

Universitaly is the Italian Ministry of University and Research's official portal for international pre-enrolment. Every non-EU applicant, including Canadians, uses it to register interest in an Italian degree program before applying for a student visa. The portal links your academic application directly to the Italian consulate that handles your visa, so the two processes run together rather than as separate tracks.

Step 1: Create your account and build your profile

Register on universitaly.it with your personal details and passport information. You upload your identity document, your high school diploma or prior degree transcripts, and any language certificates your target program requires, whether that is an Italian proficiency certificate or an English-language certificate for an English-taught program.

Step 2: Submit your program preferences

Search Universitaly's catalog of Italian universities and degree programs, then submit your ranked preferences. Some programs require you to sit a separate national admission test before or alongside your Universitaly application, medicine uses the IMAT for English-taught tracks, while several engineering and science programs use the TOLC series. Check your target program's admission requirements before you submit, since a missing test score stalls your file.

Step 3: Get your pre-enrolment confirmation

Once your application processes, Universitaly generates a pre-enrolment confirmation. This document, along with the rest of your file, becomes visible to the Italian diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over your Canadian province of residence. You use this confirmation as supporting evidence when you book and attend your student visa appointment.

Step 4: Apply for your visa at the consulate

Book your student visa appointment at the Italian consulate covering your area, bringing your Universitaly pre-enrolment confirmation plus the consulate's own required documents, typically proof of funds, accommodation arrangements and health insurance. The consulate cross-checks your pre-enrolment record when it decides on your Type D national visa for study, a process that runs in parallel to how Canadian students apply for Germany's national visa from Canada.

Step 5: Finish enrollment after you arrive

Pre-enrolment through Universitaly is not the same as final enrollment. Once you land in Italy, you complete in-person registration at your chosen university, submitting original documents and, depending on the university's requirements, a Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement of comparability for your prior qualification. That process runs separately from a WES Canada credential evaluation, which only matters if you bring an Italian qualification back into the Canadian system later.

Step 6: Register your residence permit

Apply for your permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) within 8 working days of arriving in Italy, at your local post office using the dedicated immigration kit. This step sits outside Universitaly itself but follows directly from it, since your permission to stay and study depends on completing it on time.
