Universities in Eritrea: Admission, Costs and How to Apply

Eritrea has no traditional universities. The government closed the University of Asmara in 2006/2007 and replaced it with seven specialized colleges spread across the country.

Why Eritrea has colleges instead of a university
For decades, Eritrea's only university was the University of Asmara , founded in 1958. The government closed it in 2006/2007 and reorganized its departments into separate, specialized colleges placed in different regions of the country. If you are planning higher education in Eritrea, you are choosing a college by subject and location, not applying to a single national university.
Each college reports to Eritrea's Ministry of Education rather than operating as an independent university with its own senate or accreditation body. This keeps the system centrally planned: what you study, and often where, tracks the country's stated workforce needs in health, engineering, agriculture and education.

How admission works: the Sawa gateway
Since 2003, every Eritrean student completes the final year of secondary school at the Warsay Yikealo Secondary School in Sawa, where academic classes run alongside military training. You sit your national exam there, and your result decides your path: strong performers move into one of the seven colleges, while others move into technical and vocational training instead.
There is no separate personal application portal for college entry. Placement follows your exam score and the government's assessment of which sector needs more graduates, so you do not choose your college or program the way you would in most other countries.
Rights groups have documented harsh conditions at Sawa, including forced labor and limited food and water, and have called for reform of the compulsory military training built into the final year of school, according to Human Rights Watch .
What college actually costs
Tuition at all seven public colleges is free. There is no verified private university alternative operating in the country, so the state remains the only funder of higher education inside Eritrea.
The real cost is not a tuition bill, it is time. National service is officially set at 18 months, but Human Rights Watch reports that in practice Eritreans often remain in military or civilian assignments for years or longer . Graduates are posted to jobs, including teaching and health postings, based on their results and the state's needs, with little choice over location.
Applying to a college
Complete your final secondary year at Sawa and sit the national exam there.
Your score determines whether you are placed at a college, and which one.
Report to your assigned college at the start of the academic year. There is no separate offer letter to negotiate or decline in the way applications work elsewhere.
Check with Eritrea's Ministry of Education for the latest subject list at each college, since program offerings can shift between academic years.
Studying at a college outside Eritrea
Some Eritrean students do pursue higher education in another African country instead, but this needs government exit permission, which is applied selectively and most strictly to people of national-service age. This is a separate, harder path than applying to one of the seven domestic colleges, and it is worth planning for well ahead of your final exam year.
