How University Admission Works in Algeria

TL;DR

Algeria places new students into public university through a national online platform, not open applications. Your baccalaureate average decides which fields you can enter, and you rank your choices online once results come out.

  • 🎓 You submit ranked choices on PROGRES (orientation-esi.dz), the national orientation platform.

  • 📊 Placement depends on your bac average and the minimum average set for each field that year.

  • ⏱️ Orientation runs in stages: you submit wishes, get a placement result, then confirm and enroll online.

  • 💵 Public tuition is close to free. You pay a symbolic registration fee, not full fees.

  • 📩 Miss your first choice and the system moves you to the next field on your ranked list where you qualify.

How University Admission Works in Algeria

Your baccalaureate average is the entry ticket

Entry into an Algerian public university runs on one number: your average in the baccalaureate exam. There is no separate university entrance test and no direct application to individual faculties. Your bac series (scientific, literary, technical, and so on) and your average together decide which fields open up to you.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS) sets a minimum access average for each field, every year, based on how many seats exist and how many students want that field. Fields also fall into broader domains, such as Science and Technology, Natural and Life Sciences, Economics and Management, Law and Political Science, or Letters and Languages. Your bac series decides which domains you rank at all: a literary bac series generally does not open the door to Science and Technology fields, for example. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and top engineering schools ask for averages that only a small share of bac holders reach.

How orientation works on PROGRES

Once bac results come out, you log into the national platform PROGRES to submit your orientation wishes. You list fields and university sites in order of preference, matched to your series and average. The system compares your average against the access threshold for each wish and places you into the best option you qualify for among your ranked list.

You do not pick a specific university the way you would abroad. PROGRES assigns you a field first, and the exact university or university center usually follows your wilaya of residence and which sites teach that field. Students from a wilaya without a program in their chosen field get moved to the nearest site that offers it.

Confirming your spot and enrolling

A placement result on PROGRES is only step one. After you see your result, you confirm it online, then complete enrollment on the same platform and pay the registration fee through the Edahabia card payment system. Miss the confirmation window and your seat can go to another student.

Your first year in most science and technology fields runs as a shared common core (tronc commun) with several related specialties. You choose a more specific major after this first year based on your results, so your initial placement into a broad field is not always your final specialty. Once enrolled, you collect your student card at your assigned university and get access to the student affairs office (Direction des Oeuvres Universitaires, or DOU) to apply for a bursary or hostel room if you qualify.

If you miss your first choice

Most students do not get their first wish. If your average falls short of a field's threshold, PROGRES moves you automatically to the next field on your ranked list where you qualify. Rank realistically: put your preferred field first, but list backup fields you feel confident about, since a field you never ranked is one you cannot be placed into later.

After the main orientation round, universities open a short window for students to request a review if they believe an error occurred, or to apply for a late reassignment into fields with remaining seats. These windows close fast, so check your university's admission page as soon as results are out.

Special cases

Holders of a foreign baccalaureate, or a bac from an earlier session, register through separate procedures instead of standard PROGRES orientation, usually direct at the university's admissions office (see the example process at Badji Mokhtar University, Annaba ). If your average does not reach the minimum for any field you want, look at technical and vocational training routes, which admit bac holders directly into diploma programs on separate criteria.

Whichever path you take, check your target field's minimum average and each university's admission notes on the MESRS university network page before results day, so you rank your wishes in a realistic order.
