How UDSM Admission Works
The University of Dar es Salaam does not run a separate application system for Form Six leavers. Admission for direct-entry undergraduate applicants goes through the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), the national regulator that coordinates placement across nearly all public and private universities in Tanzania, including UDSM. You apply once, list UDSM programmes among your choices, and TCU handles the matching.
This centralized system stops students from submitting duplicate applications to multiple universities and matches available places against the national pool of qualified candidates. Your National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) Form Six results feed into the system through your examination index number.
The NECTA Point System
TCU converts your Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) grades into points using a fixed scale.

Bachelor's degree eligibility requires at least two principal passes (grade E or above) that add up to a minimum of 4.0 points across the two subjects that count for your intended programme. Each UDSM programme lists which specific subject combinations it accepts, so check the programme's subject requirements before you rank it, not just your overall point total.
Applying Through the TCU Central Admission System
Applications open through TCU after ACSEE results are released. Follow these steps.
- Register on the CAS portal using your NECTA index number and personal details.
- Pay the application fee through the accepted payment channels listed on the portal.
- Browse programmes across all participating universities, including UDSM, and select the ones you qualify for based on subject combinations.
- Rank your choices in order of preference. Placing UDSM programmes higher increases your chance of matching to them if you qualify.
- Submit before the deadline for that admission window and keep your application reference number.
TCU opens more than one admission window each cycle, since not every qualified applicant is placed in the first round. The first window for the 2025/26 academic year followed this pattern, with later rounds covering places that stayed open after the first match.
UDSM Programme-Specific Requirements
Meeting the 4.0 minimum point threshold gets you into the pool, but it does not guarantee a UDSM place. Competitive programmes such as medicine, law, and engineering carry higher effective cut points each cycle because more qualified applicants apply than there are places. Check the specific entry requirements published for each UDSM faculty or college, since subject combination rules differ between programmes such as a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts.
If you hold a Diploma from an NTA Level 6 programme or a foreign qualification, you do not apply through the standard Form Six route. Diploma holders apply for direct entry into year two of eligible degree programmes, and holders of foreign certificates first send their documents to NECTA for equivalency verification before TCU processes their application.
After You Receive a UDSM Offer
Once TCU confirms your placement to UDSM, complete registration directly with the university: pay the required fees, submit original certificates for verification, and finish enrollment before the university's own deadline. Missing this step after a TCU placement forfeits your slot, so treat the TCU offer as the start of the process, not the end of it.
