University of Ibadan Admission Guide: UTME, Post-UTME and Direct Entry
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Africa Admissions & Exams
University of Ibadan uses JAMB UTME plus its own post-UTME screening for most undergraduate courses, with a separate Direct Entry route into 200 level for candidates whose prior qualification meets a department's specific requirement.
🎓 List UI as your first choice on your UTME form and choose your course carefully.
📩 Clear UI's UTME benchmark, then register for post-UTME screening on the UI admissions portal.
UI ranks candidates using an aggregate of UTME and post-UTME/O-level performance.
Direct Entry applicants register through JAMB's DE portal separately from UTME.
Confirm your qualification's current Direct Entry eligibility with your target department before applying.
How admission works at the University of Ibadan
The University of Ibadan, Nigeria's oldest university, tracing back to its 1948 founding as University College Ibadan, admits undergraduates mainly through UTME plus post-UTME screening, and separately through Direct Entry into 200 level. Both routes start on JAMB's UTME/DE portal before moving to UI's own admissions system.
Step 1: Register for UTME and select UI
Create your JAMB profile during the UTME registration window and list the University of Ibadan as your first choice institution. Choose your course carefully, since UI screens and admits by department, and enter O-level subjects (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) matching your department's required combination.
Step 2: Meet UI's UTME cut-off
UI sets its own minimum UTME score each cycle before opening post-UTME screening registration. Recent cycles have used a general floor around 200 out of 400, with competitive departments such as Medicine and Law setting a higher departmental cut-off after screening. Confirm the live figure on the UI admissions portal , since it changes every session and differs by faculty.
Step 3: Register for post-UTME screening
Once your UTME score clears UI's benchmark, log in to the UI admissions portal with your JAMB registration number, pay the screening fee, and submit your O-level results, passport photograph and other requested documents. Attend any physical or online verification stage your department schedules and bring original credentials for checking.
Step 4: Aggregate scoring and the admission list
UI ranks candidates within each department using an aggregate score that combines your UTME performance with your post-UTME/O-level result. Departments admit down this ranked list until seats fill, and you accept or reject any offer through the JAMB CAPS portal. Respond promptly, since an unanswered offer can pass to another candidate.
Direct Entry into 200 level
UI admits Direct Entry candidates into 200 level in eligible departments, but which prior qualifications count and what grade they need differs by department and changes between sessions. Before you register on JAMB's Direct Entry portal, confirm directly with your target department at UI whether your specific qualification, whether A-Level, IJMB, JUPEB, ND, HND or NCE, qualifies for Direct Entry into that course. Treat any blanket claim about UI's Direct Entry policy from outside the university's own admissions office with caution, since policies here have shifted between recent sessions.
UI's campus and colleges
UI organizes its academic departments under faculties and a College of Medicine, with the main campus in Ibadan, Oyo State, and clinical training running through University College Hospital, Nigeria's first teaching hospital. Confirm which faculty or college your department sits under, since this affects your orientation schedule and, for Medicine, your clinical rotation base.
Choosing your course wisely
Departments at UI vary widely in how many applicants compete for each seat. Medicine, Law and other high-demand programmes routinely draw far more qualified candidates than available spaces, which pushes their post-UTME and aggregate cut-offs well above UI's general benchmark. If your UTME score sits close to the floor, a less oversubscribed department within the same faculty gives you a more realistic path to admission in the same session.
After you gain admission
Once UI admits you, accept the offer on the JAMB CAPS portal first, then complete UI's own registration process, which typically includes biometric verification, payment of acceptance and tuition fees, and course registration. A CAPS acceptance alone does not complete your admission, so follow through with UI's registration deadlines to secure your place.
Documents to prepare
JAMB UTME result slip or Direct Entry result
O-level result(s) meeting the five-credit requirement including English and Mathematics
Birth certificate or age declaration
Local government/state of origin certificate
Passport photographs in UI's specified size
For Direct Entry: original certificate or statement of result for your qualifying programme
Common mistakes to avoid
Listing UI as a second choice instead of first choice on JAMB
Missing the post-UTME screening registration window
Assuming a Direct Entry qualification is accepted without confirming with the department
Leaving a CAPS admission offer unanswered past its deadline
Check the UI admissions office page and JAMB regularly for screening and Direct Entry announcements, since UI does not always notify every candidate individually.
