Two routes into UNILAG

The University of Lagos admits new undergraduates through two main channels: the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) run by JAMB, followed by a school-based post-UTME screening, and Direct Entry for candidates with A-Level, IJMB, JUPEB or approved ND/HND qualifications. Both routes start on the JAMB portal at jamb.gov.ng.

Step 1: Register for UTME and pick UNILAG as first choice

Create your JAMB profile during the annual UTME registration window and list the University of Lagos as your first choice institution. Pick your intended course carefully, since UNILAG screens and admits by department, and switching your course after registration closes rarely works. Enter O-level subjects (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) that match your course's required combination, since JAMB checks these against UNILAG's departmental requirements.

Step 2: Meet UNILAG's UTME benchmark

After JAMB releases UTME results, UNILAG publishes its own minimum score for candidates to qualify for post-UTME screening. In the 2025/26 admission cycle the general benchmark sat around 200 out of 400, with departments such as Medicine, Law and Pharmacy setting a higher figure. Confirm the current cycle's benchmark on the UNILAG admissions portal before you assume you qualify, since it changes every session.

Step 3: Register for the post-UTME screening

Once your UTME score clears the benchmark, log in to the UNILAG admissions portal with your JAMB registration number to pay the screening fee and register. The exercise checks your O-level results, JAMB details and course choice, and has run mainly as document verification and a CBT check in recent cycles rather than a full written exam for every department. Bring your O-level result, UTME slip and passport photographs to any physical verification stage your department schedules.

Step 4: Track your aggregate score and admission list

UNILAG computes an aggregate score that blends your UTME performance with your post-UTME/O-level result, commonly on a 50/50 split between the two components. Departments rank candidates by aggregate score and admit down the list until seats fill. Log in to the JAMB CAPS portal to accept or reject any offer UNILAG makes, since an unanswered offer can be withdrawn and given to another candidate.

Direct Entry into 200 level

If you hold IJMB, JUPEB, Cambridge A-Level, NCE, OND or HND results, apply through JAMB's Direct Entry portal rather than UTME. Direct Entry registration opens separately from the main UTME cycle, usually after it, and you still list UNILAG and your course as your choice. UNILAG places successful Direct Entry candidates into 200 level, skipping the first year, provided your qualification carries the grades your target department asks for and your O-level subjects match its requirement.

Choosing your course wisely

Departments at UNILAG differ sharply in competition level. Programmes like Medicine, Law, Mass Communication and most Engineering options draw far more applicants than available seats, which pushes their post-UTME and aggregate cut-offs above the general benchmark. If your UTME score sits close to the general benchmark, a less oversubscribed department in the same faculty gives you a realistic shot at admission in the same session, rather than waiting a year to reapply for a highly competitive course.

After you gain admission

Once UNILAG admits you, accept the offer on the JAMB CAPS portal, then complete UNILAG's own registration steps, which typically include biometric capture, payment of acceptance and tuition fees, and course registration for your first semester. Missing UNILAG's own registration deadline after a CAPS acceptance can still cost you your place, so treat CAPS acceptance as the first step, not the last.
