University of Nairobi Admission Guide: KUCCPS Placement and Direct Applications

Two routes into the University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi (UoN) admits undergraduates through two separate channels. If you want a government-sponsored place, with subsidised fees under the differentiated unit cost model, you apply through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS ). If you want a self-sponsored place, you apply directly to UoN and pay full programme fees.

Both routes need a minimum mean grade of C+ at KCSE, the baseline set for university degree eligibility in Kenya. Specific programmes add subject requirements on top of that, so check the course list on the UoN admissions page before you apply.

How KUCCPS placement works

KUCCPS opens its degree application window after the Kenya National Examinations Council releases KCSE results. You register at students.kuccps.net using your KCSE index number, then select up to as many course and institution combinations as the portal allows, ranked in order of preference.

Placement runs on cluster points, not your raw mean grade. Each degree programme belongs to a cluster built from four subjects relevant to that field. Your cluster points come from your grades in those specific subjects, weighted against the national performance in that cluster, not your overall KCSE score.

This is why two students with the same mean grade can qualify for different courses. A strong grade in mathematics and physics lifts your cluster points for engineering, while a strong grade in biology and chemistry does more for medicine or agriculture.

Applying for a self-sponsored place

If KUCCPS does not place you in your preferred course, or you want to bypass placement entirely, apply directly to UoN through application.uonbi.ac.ke . Self-sponsored applicants still need the C+ minimum mean grade and must supply their KCSE index number and birth certificate details during registration.

Self-sponsored places carry full-cost tuition rather than the government-subsidised rate, so confirm the fee structure for your specific programme with the UoN admissions office before you commit. This route works well for students who narrowly miss a KUCCPS cutoff or who sat KCSE in an earlier year and want to enrol outside the standard placement cycle.

Cutoff points you can expect

Cutoffs move every placement cycle depending on how many students apply for each course and how many places UoN opens. For the 2025/2026 cycle, KUCCPS-published figures reported by Kenyans.co.ke put UoN's Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery cutoff between 44 and 45 cluster points, among the highest at the university. Bachelor of Laws stood at 40.402 points, and Bachelor of Commerce at 33.703, the highest Commerce cutoff among the universities compared in that report.

Treat these as a guide, not a guarantee. Cutoffs shift each cycle with applicant numbers, so confirm the live figures on the KUCCPS student portal once results and placement windows open for your intake year.

If you miss placement

Students who fall short of their first-choice cutoff still have options. UoN's self-sponsored programmes admit many of the same courses at direct-application rates, and diploma or certificate holders can also apply through KUCCPS for progression into related degree programmes. Speak to the UoN admissions office directly if your KCSE grades sit close to a published cutoff, since some faculties adjust intake numbers between cycles.
