Public university tuition in South Africa ran roughly R44,000 to R108,800 a year in 2025 depending on the university and course load, on top of registration, book and residence costs. Add a realistic monthly living budget of about R7,000 to R15,000 depending on your city and accommodation type, and check the NSFAS accommodation caps if you qualify for state funding.
💵 Wits ran roughly R44,000-R91,000/year. UCT roughly R51,690-R108,800/year in 2025
UNISA distance study starts from about R5,000/year for a light module load
🏠 Total monthly living costs run about R7,000-R15,000 depending on city and housing type
NSFAS's 2025 accommodation cap for catered metro residences was R65,993/year
Registration, textbook and material fees sit on top of tuition and are compulsory
Tuition at public universities
| University | Annual tuition (2025) |
|---|---|
| University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) | Roughly R44,000-R91,000 |
| University of Cape Town (UCT) | Roughly R51,690-R108,800 |
| University of South Africa (UNISA), distance | About R2,000-R4,500 per module, typically R5,000+ a year for a light load |
These figures, drawn from 2025 fee reporting , cover a single academic year and vary by faculty and course combination. Public university fees across the country averaged around R62,000 for the year, though your actual bill depends heavily on your program: engineering, health sciences and business programs typically cost more than humanities or education degrees. Confirm the exact fee schedule for your specific program on the university's official fees page before you commit, since amounts change most years.
Fees beyond tuition
Budget for costs that sit outside the headline tuition figure. Every university charges a registration fee at the start of the year, along with a student services levy that funds things like the library, sports facilities and health clinic. Add textbooks and course materials, which run into thousands of rand a year depending on your field, plus a non-refundable application fee for each university and program you apply to. Residence or private accommodation is a separate cost again, covered in more detail below.
Monthly living costs by city
| City | Shared room rent | Total monthly living cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town | Roughly R4,500-R8,000 | Roughly R7,000-R15,000 |
| Johannesburg | Roughly R3,500-R6,000 | Roughly R7,000-R15,000 |
| Pretoria | Roughly R3,500-R6,000 | Roughly R7,000-R15,000 |
| Stellenbosch | Roughly R4,500-R7,500 | Roughly R7,000-R15,000 |
These ranges, from 2025 student accommodation reporting , cover rent for a shared room plus groceries, transport and utilities. Private, non-shared student housing costs more, often R11,000-R14,000 a month in Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Cheaper university towns away from the major metros generally cost less across the board.
NSFAS accommodation caps
If you qualify for NSFAS funding, your accommodation allowance is capped by residence type and location. For the 2025 academic year, NSFAS set catered metro residences at R65,993 a year, catered non-metro at R56,633, non-catered metro at R52,000 and non-catered non-metro at R42,640, according to a March 2025 government statement . NSFAS only funds accredited private accommodation, capped at the non-catered rate. Unaccredited private housing isn't covered at all. Students in catered residences also receive a personal care allowance of R3,167 a year on top of the accommodation cap, while non-catered students receive a living allowance of R17,160 a year.
Building a realistic budget
Add tuition, registration, residence and books together before you compare universities, not tuition alone
Ask your university's financial aid office about payment plans if you cannot pay tuition upfront
Check whether your bursary or loan covers a meal plan or only rent, since food is a major monthly cost
Set aside money for transport, data and printing, which add up over a full year
Recheck fee schedules every year, since South African university costs typically rise faster than general inflation
