Where Iraqi applicants interview right now
The US Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate in Erbil are open but not running routine visa interviews as of August 2026, after a security alert. Since September 2025, State Department policy also requires you to interview in your country of residence unless the US does not run visa services there, in which case you get routed to a designated post. Filling out the DS-160 correctly
The DS-160 asks for your travel history, family details, education, work history, and the SEVIS ID number from your I-20. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport, and match your program dates and school name to your I-20 word for word. A mismatch between your DS-160 and your I-20 is one of the easiest, most avoidable causes of delay at the counter, so review both documents side by side before you submit.

Pay the SEVIS fee at the official FMJfee.com portal before you schedule your interview, and the MRV fee listed on the State Department fee schedule when you book. The $250 Visa Integrity Fee, added by the law signed in July 2025, is collected at the point your visa is issued rather than at booking, and consulates rolled it out at different speeds through 2025 and into 2026, per Boston University's international student office .
What happens at the interview
Most F-1 interviews last a few minutes. The officer checks your English, your familiarity with your own program and school, your funding source, and your plan for after graduation. Answer in your own words rather than a memorized script, and keep answers short and specific: name your major, your school, and why you picked it.
Common reasons for refusal
Section 214(b): the officer was not convinced you intend to return to Iraq after your studies. This is the most common refusal reason for student visas worldwide and is about your answers and evidence, not a document error.
Unclear funding: a bank balance that appeared right before the interview, or a sponsor who cannot explain the source of funds, raises questions.
Vague program answers: not knowing your own course of study, or a major that does not connect to your academic background or career plan, works against you.
Incomplete SEVIS record: a mismatch between your I-20 and your DS-160, or a SEVIS fee that has not registered yet, causes delays or refusal.
If your visa is refused or held for review
A 214(b) refusal is not a ban. You can reapply at any time with stronger evidence of your ties to Iraq and your funding, though you pay the MRV fee again each time. A case marked 221(g) means administrative processing: the officer needs more time or more documents, and there is no set timeline for that review. Do not book non-refundable flights until your passport comes back with the visa in it.
After you land: staying in status
Report to your school's international student office within the window it sets, usually shortly before or after your program start date, so it can activate your SEVIS record. A DHS final rule effective September 15, 2026 also changes how long your entry stamp is valid: instead of an open-ended duration of status, you get a fixed admission period tied to your program length, capped at four years, and you file for an extension with USCIS if your program runs longer.
