IELTS Band Score Targets for Vietnamese Students by Study Destination

Most UK, Australian, Canadian and US universities ask for an overall IELTS band of 6.0-6.5 for bachelor's degrees and 6.5-7.0 or higher for master's degrees. Only the UK visa route ties a fixed language level to the visa itself, the other three leave the score entirely to your university.
🎓 Bachelor's programs: overall band 6.0-6.5 is standard across all four destinations.
🎓 Master's programs: overall band 6.5-7.0, competitive fields often ask for 7.0 or higher.
📩 UK student visa: your English level must reach CEFR B2 for degree-level courses.
🏠 Australia, Canada and the US: your institution sets the score, not the visa office.
⏱️ Scholarship applications often want 0.5-1.0 band above the university minimum.
Why your target score depends on destination and level
IELTS requirements for Vietnamese applicants differ by country, by degree level, and often by individual program. Universities set their own minimums, and only the UK links a fixed English level directly to the student visa. Treat the figures below as a starting range, then confirm the exact number on the admission page of the program you want.
| Destination | Typical bachelor's minimum | Typical master's minimum | Visa-level requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | 6.0-6.5 overall | 6.5-7.0 overall | CEFR B2 (degree level) |
| Australia | 6.0-6.5 overall | 6.5-7.0 overall | Set by course provider |
| Canada | 6.0-6.5 overall | 6.5-7.0 overall | Set by the DLI |
| US | 6.0-6.5 overall | 6.5-7.5 overall | No IELTS requirement for the F-1 visa |
UK: a university score and a separate visa requirement
UK universities publish their own IELTS minimums per program, commonly 6.0-6.5 overall for bachelor's degrees and 6.5-7.0 for master's degrees. Professional courses such as law, medicine and teacher training often ask for 7.0 or higher in every skill, not only the overall band. Separately, the UK student visa route sets its own floor: the Home Office requires English proof at CEFR level B2 for degree-level study and B1 for courses below degree level, checked through an approved Secure English Language Test provider unless you qualify for an exemption (gov.uk ). Meeting your university's IELTS requirement normally clears the visa's English condition too, since course providers set their bar at or above B2.
Australia: your course provider decides
Australian universities set IELTS minimums directly instead of through a fixed visa number. Bachelor's programs typically ask for an overall band of 6.0-6.5, and master's programs 6.5-7.0, with each skill often required to sit close to the overall score. Your Confirmation of Enrolment from a registered course provider carries the evidence of English ability for the student visa (subclass 500) application, so the number that matters is on your offer letter, not a general country rule.
Canada: designated learning institutions set the bar
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada does not publish one IELTS score for study permits. Each designated learning institution sets its own English requirement, usually 6.0-6.5 overall for undergraduate admission and 6.5-7.0 for graduate admission. Some research-intensive universities ask for a minimum of 6.5 in every skill rather than only the overall band, which raises your real target if your weakest skill sits below the rest.
US: no visa language test, but competitive programs ask more
The F-1 student visa carries no IELTS or TOEFL requirement. The consular interview focuses on your study plans and ties to Vietnam, not your test score. Universities still set their own English minimums for admission, usually 6.0-6.5 for bachelor's programs and 6.5-7.5 for master's and PhD programs at competitive schools, so treat the admission requirement, not the visa, as your real target.
If your score falls short
Falling 0.5 band under a program's requirement does not always end your application. Many universities offer a pre-sessional English course that lets you enroll conditionally and clear the language requirement before your main program starts, and some accept a slightly lower band with extra in-sessional English support once classes begin. Ask your admissions office directly whether either option exists before you assume you need a retake.
How to pick your actual target score
Check the exact IELTS requirement on the program page you are applying to, not a country-wide average.
Add 0.5 band above the published minimum if you plan to apply for a merit scholarship.
Confirm whether the school needs a minimum score in every skill or only in the overall band.
For the UK, remember the visa condition (CEFR B2) sits below most university minimums, so your admission offer is normally the harder bar to clear.
