Why IELTS Demand Has Surged Among Vietnamese Students

IELTS demand among Vietnamese students has grown for three overlapping reasons: universities award admission bonus points for a qualifying score, some schools let a strong score count toward the national high school exam's English section, and nearly every major study destination requires it for a student visa. Each driver works independently, which compounds total demand.

Why IELTS demand keeps rising in Vietnam
Vietnam has become one of the larger IELTS markets in Asia, and the growth traces to several drivers that reinforce each other rather than one single policy.
University admission bonus points
Many Vietnamese universities run admission schemes that convert a qualifying IELTS score into bonus points added to a student's national high school exam result, or accept the score as one path into an English taught program. This turns IELTS from a study abroad tool into a domestic university admission tool, pulling in students with no plan to study outside Vietnam.
The national high school exam link
Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training has, in different years, allowed a qualifying foreign language certificate including IELTS to count toward or replace the English component of the national high school exam (ky thi tot nghiep THPT). The exact conversion table, and whether the exemption applies at all, changes as MOET revises the exam regulation, including around the shift to the 2018 general education curriculum. Confirm the current rule on MOET's own site for the specific exam year rather than relying on an older rule that may no longer apply.
Visa requirements at major destinations
Most popular destinations for Vietnamese students, including Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, require an approved English test score as part of the student visa evidence package. IELTS remains one of the most widely accepted options across these systems, which locks in baseline demand independent of any domestic policy in Vietnam.
Earlier testing through international curriculum schools
Cambridge and IB curriculum schools have expanded across Vietnamese cities, and these programs push students toward English proficiency testing earlier than the traditional public school track, some as early as lower secondary. This shifts part of the demand curve younger, adding a segment of test takers who are not preparing for an imminent university application.
Wider access to test preparation
Test preparation centers have multiplied in major cities, and rising household incomes mean more middle class families can afford private coaching. This widens the pool of realistic test takers beyond students already headed abroad, adding volume from the domestic admission and general proficiency segments described above.
Retesting to hit a specific band score
Because many Vietnamese universities and most foreign destinations set a minimum band score rather than accepting any attempt, students often sit IELTS more than once to reach the required score, which adds to total test volume beyond the number of individual test takers. A student aiming for a 6.5 overall for a UK university, for example, may sit the test two or three times if early attempts land at 6.0.
What this means if you are preparing to test
Because these drivers stack, check which one actually applies to you before you commit to a test date. If your goal is a domestic university admission bonus, confirm your target university's current conversion table.
If your goal is a study visa, confirm the accepted test list and minimum score for your destination directly with its immigration authority. The two goals do not always require the same score or the same test.
