If your university has invited you to a virtual interview, you are now part of the default admissions process at Oxford, Cambridge, and a growing list of US and Canadian schools. How Virtual Admissions Interviews Work

The number of pre-recorded video applications is climbing fast. Brown also restricts Glimpse to US high school students and QuestBridge applicants.

InitialView Live Interviews for International Students

InitialView started as a Beijing based service screening Chinese applicants for US universities, designed to verify English fluency and writing authenticity. The University of Pennsylvania states the InitialView interview is optional, does not replace English proficiency testing, and offers fee waivers for hardship cases.

InitialView is accepted by numerous US colleges and regularly provides interview materials to admissions offices according to Spark Admissions . Schools using InitialView include Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Duke, UVA, UPenn Law, and Michigan Law.

Kira Talent for MBA and Graduate Programs

Kira Talent runs asynchronous video and written assessments for graduate programs. Kira's official help center explains two question formats:

• Video questions: The prompt plays once on screen, you get a short preparation window, then a fixed recording time
• Written questions: Text-based prompts with longer response windows and no preparation period

Answers submit automatically when the timer ends. You see prep and response countdowns on screen, and the platform shows you the assessment length before you start through the "Check In" and "Learn More" buttons.

Technical Setup Checklist

The Complete University Guide recommends joining the meeting 10 minutes early to test camera and microphone. Use this list before any live virtual interview:

1. Charge your device fully or plug it into power
2. Confirm a strong Wi-Fi signal, ideally with a wired backup

• Sit up straight and keep your eyes on the camera, not your own preview
• Speak slowly and clearly, especially if English is not your first language
• Pause after answering to give the interviewer space for a follow-up
• Show your reasoning out loud, particularly for Oxbridge problem-solving questions

What to Do If the Connection Fails

UCAS tells applicants to explain the issue to the interview team, rejoin the meeting if the connection drops, and call the admissions office if rejoining fails. Keep the admissions office number on a sticky note on your monitor before the call begins.

Live interviews and pre-recorded videos lean on the same content areas. Expect questions across these categories:

Washington Monthly reported applicant Anika Suman's Brown Glimpse video has been viewed more than 905,000 times on YouTube. Other widely shared examples from the same article include a stuffed animal themed video at 188,000 views and an animated friend video at 810,000 views. These videos work because they show traits a written essay leaves out: voice, humour, comfort on camera.

Visa Interviews Are Still In-Person

Virtual admissions interviews do not extend to F-1 student visa appointments. The US Department of State requires in-person interviews at a US Embassy or Consulate for most nonimmigrant visa applicants. As of June 18, 2025 , F, M, and J applicants must also set their social media profiles to public for consular vetting. Plan your admissions interview prep separately from your visa interview prep.
