Vocational Certificate (ปวช/ปวส) vs General Track: Which Path Leads Where After Grade 9

TL;DR

After grade 9, Thai students choose between the vocational certificate (ปวช) and the general academic track (M.4-M.6). ปวช trains you for a trade over 3 years and lets you work right away or continue to a bachelor's degree, while the general track builds toward TCAS, Thailand's university entrance system.

  • 🎓 ปวช runs 3 years under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC), mixing trade skills with general subjects

  • General track (M.4-M.6) is 3 years of academic subjects that prepare you for TCAS national exams

  • ปวช graduates start work immediately, continue to ปวส (2 more years), or apply to a bachelor's degree at universities that accept vocational qualifiers

  • OVEC oversees roughly 429 public vocational colleges across Thailand, plus ~484 private VET colleges

  • 📩 Some bachelor's programs, especially at technology-focused universities, admit ปวช/ปวส holders directly through quota rounds instead of the standard M.6 route

Vocational Certificate (ปวช/ปวส) vs General Track: Which Path Leads Where After Grade 9

Two Roads After Lower Secondary School

Every student finishing grade 9 (M.3) in Thailand picks one of two main tracks. The general academic track keeps you in a classroom for three more years (M.4 to M.6) studying core subjects, aimed at university entrance through TCAS. The vocational certificate track, known as ปวช (Por Wor Chor), trains you in a specific trade over the same three years under the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC).

Both tracks last three years and both end with a recognized qualification for further study or work. The difference is what you spend those three years doing, and how directly each one points toward a bachelor's degree.

What the Vocational Certificate (ปวช) Covers

ปวช programs split time between general education subjects (Thai, math, English, science) and hands-on training in a chosen field: electronics, automotive, tourism, accounting, agriculture, and dozens of other trades. Students train in workshops and labs alongside classroom study, and many programs include placements with employers in the final year.

OVEC oversees roughly 429 public vocational colleges across Thailand , alongside a further ~484 private VET colleges nationwide (EEF, 2023), run through Institutes of Vocational Education that group colleges by region and specialty. A ปวช graduate holds a recognized upper-secondary-equivalent certificate and enters the workforce directly in their trained field.

What the General Track (M.4-M.6) Covers

The general track keeps students on a broad academic curriculum: Thai language, math, science, social studies, and English, with elective streams like Science-Math, Arts-Math, or Arts-Language starting around M.4. There is no trade training built in. The track exists to prepare students for the national testing system most universities use to select students.

Graduates finish with an M.6 certificate, the standard entry qualification TCAS is built around.

Common Vocational Fields and Where They Lead

ปวช colleges group programs into broad fields: industrial trades (electronics, automotive, welding, mechatronics), commerce and business, tourism and hospitality, home economics, agriculture, and textiles and design. Each field connects to a matching industry sector, so a student training in automotive mechanics graduates with a certificate employers in that trade recognize directly, unlike a general-track graduate who needs further study before entering skilled work.

Employers in manufacturing, tourism, and technical services in Thailand hire directly from ปวช and ปวส graduates, and several large industrial zones run dual-education partnerships with OVEC colleges, placing students in paid on-the-job training during their final year.

From ปวช to a Bachelor's Degree

A ปวช certificate does not close off university. Graduates who want more technical training first move to ปวส (Por Wor Sor), a 2-year higher vocational diploma equivalent to an associate degree. From ปวส, several public universities, especially technology-focused ones like the King Mongkut's group and the Rajamangala University of Technology network, run bachelor's degree programs built for ปวช/ปวส graduates in matching fields, often compressed to 2 years since credits from the vocational diploma transfer in.

TCAS eligibility is not fixed to the M.6 route. mytcas.com , the national TCAS portal, lists faculty-by-faculty entry qualifications, and many faculties accept ปวช or ปวส holders in Quota or Direct Admission rounds, particularly for engineering, industrial technology, and business programs connected to the applicant's trained field. Requirements differ by faculty, so check the specific program's entry qualification instead of assuming vocational graduates need to redo M.4-M.6.

Exams and Interviews Differ Too

General-track applicants sit national tests (TGAT, TPAT, A-Level, depending on the round and faculty) built around the academic curriculum they studied for three years. Vocational applicants moving into a matched bachelor's program often face a portfolio review, an interview about their training and workplace experience, and sometimes a subject test tied to their trade rather than a full academic battery. This makes the vocational-to-bachelor's route more accessible for a student whose strength sits in applied skills rather than exam-style academic testing.

Which Path Fits Which Student

  • Choose ปวช if you already know the trade or industry you want to work in and prefer hands-on learning over a full academic load.

  • Choose ปวช if starting to earn sooner matters more than keeping every university faculty open by default.

  • Choose the general track if you are aiming at a faculty that requires the standard science or arts stream, such as medicine, law, or a broad-based bachelor's degree.

  • Choose the general track if you have not settled on a trade and want to keep the widest range of TCAS options open.

  • Either way, check the specific faculty's entry requirement on mytcas.com before committing, since acceptance of vocational qualifications varies program by program.
