By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026

TL;DR

Federal holidays close banks, post offices and government offices, but campus life shuts down hardest around Thanksgiving and winter break, when dining halls close and most students leave campus for days or weeks.

  • ⏱️ 11 federal holidays in 2026, from New Year's Day to Christmas

  • 🎓 Thanksgiving break usually empties campus for 4-5 days

  • 🏠 Winter break runs roughly 3-4 weeks between semesters

  • Grocery stores usually stay open shorter hours on holidays, except Christmas Day

What Closes on US Holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Academic Calendar Explained

The federal holidays that shape the US calendar

The US observes 11 federal holidays. Banks, post offices, federal and most state government offices, and public schools close on these days. As of August 2026, the schedule for 2026 is:

Holiday2026 date
New Year's DayThursday, January 1
Martin Luther King Jr. DayMonday, January 19
Washington's Birthday (Presidents Day)Monday, February 16
Memorial DayMonday, May 25
Juneteenth National Independence DayFriday, June 19
Independence Day (observed)Friday, July 3
Labor DayMonday, September 7
Columbus DayMonday, October 12
Veterans DayWednesday, November 11
Thanksgiving DayThursday, November 26
Christmas DayFriday, December 25

This list follows the official OPM federal holiday schedule . Universities are not government agencies, so they set their own academic calendars around these dates rather than closing on all of them.

Thanksgiving empties campus more than any single-day holiday

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and most universities give a break that runs from the Wednesday before through the weekend, sometimes a full week. Dining halls cut back to limited hours or close entirely, and international students who cannot travel home often find their international student office or a local host family organizing a Thanksgiving meal for students staying on campus.

Book flights or trains for this period months ahead. Thanksgiving week is one of the heaviest domestic travel weeks in the country, and prices rise sharply as the date gets closer.

Winter break is the longest shutdown of the year

Most universities close residence halls and dining services for several weeks between the end of fall finals and the start of spring semester, typically covering Christmas and New Year's Day. Some dorms require you to apply for special permission or pay a fee to stay on campus during this closure, so check your housing office's policy well before finals end.

Christmas Day itself is the closest the US gets to a full national shutdown. Grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants and public transit all run reduced hours or close outright, more than on any other holiday including Thanksgiving.

What typically stays open

  • Large pharmacy chains often keep at least some hours open on most holidays except Christmas.

  • Convenience stores and gas stations rarely close fully.

  • Hospitals and emergency services never close.

  • Public transit usually runs on a reduced holiday schedule rather than stopping.

Banks and the US Postal Service close on every federal holiday listed above, so plan bill payments, wire transfers and mail around these dates.

Building your own holiday plan

Find your university's official academic calendar early in the semester. It lists the exact dates dining halls, libraries and offices close, which can differ from the federal list above by a few days. If you plan to travel internationally during a break, confirm your visa and I-20 or DS-2019 documents are current, since re-entry requires a valid signature within the last year for most programs.

Set aside a plan for the empty-campus stretches ahead of time, whether that means booking travel, arranging a host family visit, or confirming which dining option, if any, stays open near you.

The day after Thanksgiving is the opposite of closed

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is one of the busiest retail days of the year rather than a closure. Stores open early, some overnight, with major sales, and malls and shopping areas near campus get crowded fast. If you want to experience it, expect long lines and plan your trip early in the morning.

Spring break is not a federal holiday, but it still empties campus

Most universities schedule a week-long spring break in March, separate from any federal holiday. Dining and campus services usually stay open on a reduced schedule rather than closing fully, since not every student travels, but the campus feels noticeably quieter. Check your specific academic calendar, since spring break dates shift year to year and differ between universities.

Documents to check before any break

Before Thanksgiving, winter break or spring break, confirm your I-20 or DS-2019 travel signature is current if you plan to leave and re-enter the US. A signature usually needs to be within the last 12 months for continuing students, so check with your DSO ahead of the break rather than at the airport.

Calling home works differently around US holidays

Thanksgiving and Christmas both center on a family meal in the afternoon or evening US time, which lands at very different hours depending on your home country's time zone. If you plan to call family during the meal itself, check the time difference in advance, since a call that fits neatly into a US Thursday evening might land in the middle of the night back home.

Some states also add their own state holidays on top of the federal list, closing state offices and sometimes public schools for an extra day or two that your university may or may not follow. Your university's HR or academic calendar page is the source to check, not the federal list alone.
