When to Start Your US Job or Internship Search: A Timeline for International Students
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026
Internship and job searches in the US start six to twelve months before you need the position, because CPT authorization takes days but OPT work authorization takes months of federal processing.
📅 Tech and finance internship applications open in August-October for the next summer
⏱️ CPT is authorized by your school and can be ready within days of an offer
🛂 OPT applications go to USCIS and may be filed 90 days before your program end date
🎓 Graduate students on 1-2 year programs need to start searching in their first semester
📋 File OPT paperwork at the earliest point in your window, not near graduation
Why timing matters more for international students
Your work authorization does not arrive automatically. CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is authorized by your school and can be ready within days once you have a job offer and meet the academic requirements. OPT (Optional Practical Training) requires a federal application to USCIS , and federal processing takes months, not days. Your job search timeline needs to account for both.
Missing an application window by a few weeks pushes your start date back by a full processing cycle. Build this lead time into your search from the start instead of following the same timeline as a US citizen classmate.
Undergraduate timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Year 1, fall and spring | Build your resume, attend a career fair as an observer, work on-campus jobs without needing CPT or OPT |
| Year 2, fall | Apply for summer internships once you complete one full academic year, the standard CPT eligibility requirement |
| Year 3, fall | Apply again for summer internships, often the internship that leads to a return offer |
| Year 4, fall | Apply for full-time roles and confirm your OPT filing window with your DSO |
Graduate and master's timeline
A one or two year master's program leaves no room for a slow start. Meet your career center advisor and build your resume in your first weeks on campus. If your program runs one year, apply for full-time roles in your first semester, since many employers hire nine to twelve months ahead of a start date.
CPT and OPT paperwork lead time
CPT requires one full academic year of enrollment before you qualify, except for graduate programs that require an internship as part of the curriculum, according to Study in the States . Your DSO authorizes it directly on your I-20, often within days of a signed offer letter.
OPT applications go to USCIS on Form I-765. You may file up to 90 days before your program end date and up to 60 days after it, per Study in the States . File at the earliest point in that window instead of waiting, since processing time shifts over time. Check current USCIS processing times before you plan a start date around an OPT approval.
The STEM OPT extension adds up to 24 months of work authorization for degrees on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify, according to USCIS .
Deadlines to track
Confirm your official program end date with your DSO early, since your OPT window counts from that date, not your last exam or your diploma date. Some employers set onboarding deadlines that arrive before your OPT approval comes through, so ask each employer directly about their earliest possible start date and build a buffer into your search timeline.
