Where to Write the SAT in Canada: Test Centers and Registration Deadlines

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026 • Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

Regular SAT registration closes 15 days before the test date, and late registration closes 11 days before for an extra fee. Canadian test centers are fewer relative to demand than US ones, so seats in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal often run out before the official deadline.

  • 📩 Register the day registration opens for your test date, not near the deadline.

  • Widen your search to smaller cities and towns near you if your home center is full.

  • ⏱️ Late registration exists but does not guarantee a seat where you want one.

  • Borrowing a device for the digital SAT needs a request 30 days before the test date.

Where to Write the SAT in Canada: Test Centers and Registration Deadlines

SAT registration deadlines, worldwide and in Canada

College Board runs one registration calendar for every country. The regular deadline closes 15 days before each test date, and a late registration window follows, closing 11 days before the test date for an added fee, according to College Board's registration deadlines page . Late registration is open in Canada the same as everywhere else. It does not guarantee a seat at the center you want.

If you plan to borrow a device to take the digital SAT, submit that request at least 30 days before your test date so College Board has time to arrange it.

Why Canadian centers fill before the deadline

Canada has a small number of SAT test centers compared to how many students in each city want a seat on the same date. Centers in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa and Edmonton close registration once every seat is booked, sometimes weeks before the official deadline. The College Board registration hub lists a separate international testing pathway, which reflects how differently the seat math works outside the US.

This hits hardest around the August, September, October and November test dates, since these line up with US early action and early decision applications. If you wait until two weeks before the deadline to register, expect your closest center to already show no availability.

Finding a seat when your local center is full

  • Search every test center within a few hours of home, not only the one closest to you.

  • Check smaller cities and towns. They fill slower than a downtown Toronto or Vancouver location.

  • Look at test centers across the US border if transport, and an overnight stay for an early check-in, are realistic options.

  • Set your own registration reminder for the day each test date opens, typically weeks ahead of the deadline.

  • Book the next available test date instead of waiting on a cancellation at your first choice.

Changing your test date or center

Change your test date, center or test type up until the late registration deadline, 11 days before your original date, based on availability at the new option. A change is not possible after that point, so treat the late deadline as a hard cutoff rather than a backup plan.

Matching your test date to application deadlines

Most US early decision and early action deadlines fall on November 1 or November 15. To have a score ready in time, most Canadian grade 12 applicants sit the SAT in August, September or October. If you apply regular decision instead, a November or December score usually still arrives in time for admissions offices.

These same months are the ones every applicant wants, which is why Canadian centers run out of seats first for them. Treat your personal deadline as the day registration opens, not the date printed on College Board's calendar.

Other Canada-specific registration details

Registration outside the US runs through a separate international pathway on College Board's site, with its own accepted photo ID list and its own fee schedule in US dollars. Confirm the accepted ID list for your country before test day, since requirements outside the US differ from domestic US rules.

Consider the ACT as a backup network

The ACT is accepted alongside the SAT at essentially every US university that considers standardized test scores. It runs on a separate registration system and a separate set of test centers. If every SAT center within reach is full for your target month, check ACT test centers in the same cities before assuming you must travel further than planned.

Running both searches at once, rather than one after the other, saves time during a season when Canadian seats disappear fast. A confirmed ACT seat in your home city beats an unconfirmed SAT seat two provinces away.

Sending your scores once you have them

College Board's Score Choice feature lets you pick which test date's scores go to each university, so retaking the SAT after a full Canadian registration season does not force you to send every earlier score. Confirm each university's own score policy anyway, since some schools require every sitting regardless of Score Choice.

Plan a full testing year ahead where you can

Canadian students aiming for US early rounds benefit from starting the SAT search in grade 11 rather than grade 12. Registering for a spring test date in grade 11 gives you a practice run at the registration process, and a fallback score if your grade 12 fall dates fill before you reach the site. It also spreads your test attempts across more registration windows, so one full center does not remove your only shot at a date that fits your application timeline.

Canadian students who treat registration as time-sensitive, rather than deadline-driven, keep more control over which center and date they get. Book as soon as each test date opens, and build in a backup center from the start.
