Withdrawing From a University Abroad Mid-Course: Visa Status, Refunds and What Happens Next

TL;DR

Withdrawing from your course abroad ends your visa status almost immediately, not on some later expiry date. Refunds depend on your provider's own policy and how far into the term you leave.

  • 🇬🇧 UK: your visa gets curtailed once your university reports the withdrawal, usually within 10 working days, and you generally have around 60 days to leave.

  • 🇦🇺 Australia: withdrawing without approval breaks your course progress condition and puts your visa at risk of cancellation.

  • 🇨🇦 Canada: once you are no longer enrolled or actively pursuing studies, you stop meeting your study permit conditions.

  • 💵 Tuition refunds follow your provider's published refund policy, not a fixed government rule. Ask before you formally withdraw.

Withdrawing From a University Abroad Mid-Course: Visa Status, Refunds and What Happens Next

Withdrawal changes your immigration status the same day

Finishing a degree ends your enrollment on schedule, so your visa or permit has a predictable wind-down period built in. Withdrawing before completion is different. Your institution is required to report it, and that report is what starts the clock on your visa or permit, not your own decision to leave.

Before you submit any formal withdrawal, talk to your international student office and, if you hold a scholarship, your sponsor. Understand the visa and funding consequences before you make the decision final, since some of these steps cannot be reversed.

United Kingdom

Once you formally withdraw, your university must tell the Home Office within 10 working days. This report curtails your Student visa, meaning the Home Office ends it early rather than letting it run to its original expiry date. UKVI typically sets your new visa expiry to around 60 days after the date it is notified, giving you a short window to wrap up your affairs and leave the UK, or to switch into a different valid immigration route if you qualify for one.

If you plan to resume study later, whether at the same institution or elsewhere, you need to apply for a fresh Student visa when you have a new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Withdrawing does not preserve your old visa for a future return.

Australia

Withdrawing from your course without your provider's approval breaks condition 8202, the course enrollment and progress condition attached to your student visa. Your provider is obliged to report non-compliance, and the Department of Home Affairs can act under the Migration Act 1958 to cancel your visa once it receives that report.

If you have a genuine reason to leave, discuss it with your provider first. An approved, documented withdrawal for compassionate or compelling circumstances is treated differently from simply stopping attendance and letting your provider report you as non-compliant.

Canada

Your study permit depends on you remaining enrolled at your designated learning institution and actively pursuing your studies. Once you withdraw, you no longer meet that condition, and your compliance status changes immediately, not at some later date tied to your permit's printed expiry.

This is different from finishing your program on schedule, where your study permit stays valid for 90 days after your school confirms you completed your studies, giving you time to leave Canada or apply for another status. Withdrawal does not come with that same buffer. If you withdraw, contact your designated learning institution and consider applying to restore or change your status promptly rather than waiting. Tuition refunds are set by your provider, not your visa rules

How much of your tuition you get back depends on your institution's own refund policy and how far into the term you withdraw, not on immigration rules. Most institutions publish a sliding scale: a larger refund if you withdraw before the term starts or in its first weeks, shrinking toward nothing once you pass the institution's census or add/drop deadline.

Ask your finance office for the exact refund policy in writing before you submit a withdrawal request. If a scholarship or loan is paying your fees, confirm separately with that sponsor how a mid-course withdrawal affects amounts already disbursed, since scholarship terms and university refund policies are two separate sets of rules.

Disclose the withdrawal on future applications

A mid-course withdrawal follows you into your next visa application, wherever you apply next. Immigration officers ask about previous study abroad, and leaving out a withdrawal you know they can verify risks a misrepresentation finding, which is treated far more seriously than the withdrawal itself.

Prepare a short, honest explanation of why you withdrew and what changed since. A well-documented, approved withdrawal for a genuine reason rarely damages a future application. An undisclosed one almost always does more damage than the original decision to leave.

How to leave in good standing

  • Get your withdrawal approved and documented through your institution's official process, not by simply stopping attendance.

  • Ask exactly when your visa or permit stops being valid and what your departure deadline is.

  • Request your academic transcript and any completion or attendance letters before you leave. You need these for future applications.

  • If your circumstances might change again, keep every email confirming the reason and approval for your withdrawal. It strengthens any future visa application.
