How It Works

A "blocked account" (German Sperrkonto) is a special bank account where you deposit a fixed sum that the bank releases to you in monthly installments after you arrive. Both Germany and Austria use it as the standard proof of financial means for non-EU/EEA student residence permits.

🇩🇪 Germany — BAföG-linked Rate

The required amount is tied to the BAföG maximum monthly grant. For 2026 this is €992 per month, producing a 12-month annual deposit of €11,904. The bank releases €992 per month after arrival to cover rent, food, health insurance, and personal expenses.

🇦🇹 Austria — ASVG Richtsatz Tiered

Austria sets two age tiers based on the ASVG § 293 Ausgleichszulagenrichtsatz: applicants under 24 must prove €722.58/month; applicants 24 or older must prove €1,308.39/month. If your monthly rent exceeds €386.43 (the Wert der freien Station), the excess is added to the monthly proof requirement.

Adversarial Logic Built In

  • Scholarship offsets are capped at the gross monthly requirement so they cannot mathematically zero the deposit beyond the statutory floor.
  • Rent excess only applies to Austria; entering rent while Germany is selected does not deflate the BAföG-linked figure.
  • Boundary case: a zero or negative net requirement clamps to €0 (fully covered) rather than reporting a negative deposit.
