The Associate of Science in Forestry is offered by the University of Guyana's Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and is organised on a semester basis, opening with foundation subjects such as Introduction to General Chemistry, Forest Biology and Computer Literacy I before moving into forestry-specific courses like Forest Mensuration and Inventory, Dendrology and Silviculture in the Second Year.
Entry is built around prior training in agriculture or forestry: holders of a Guyana School of Agriculture diploma or forestry certificate, school leavers with CXC or O-level passes in English, Mathematics and a science subject, or technical-institute diploma holders can all apply, and mature candidates aged 21 and above may be admitted on relevant experience.
It is aimed at students planning careers in forest management, conservation or the wider agricultural sector in Guyana, combining classroom instruction with practically oriented forestry science.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry is open to holders of a Diploma or Certificate in Agriculture, or a Certificate in Forestry (pass with credit), from the Guyana School of Agriculture, with practical forestry experience weighed for those graduating below credit level. School leavers need at least five CXC General Proficiency or IGCSE/GCE O-level passes, including English Language, Mathematics and a science subject, or four such passes combined with a Credit-grade Ordinary Diploma in Science from the Government Technical Institute. Mature applicants aged 21 or over may enter on evidence of recent academic achievement and relevant experience, and other equivalent qualifications are considered case by case.
