This BTEC HNC in general engineering is a part-time course for people already working in engineering who want to advance their industrial careers, and for those who intend to continue to HND or degree level. Students attend classes one day each week in term time at Greenfield Road's William Kennish Building over two academic years.
Eight units are studied in total. Year one covers engineering design, engineering maths, engineering science and electrical and electronic principles. Year two covers managing a professional project, materials properties and testing, mechanical workshop practices, and quality and process improvement. Every unit is expected to take about 150 hours of study.
Progress is checked through continuous assessment, mainly written assignments and open or closed book tests, alongside case studies, projects and presentations. Protective equipment is supplied, while learners bring a laptop and stationery of their own. The course leads to HND or degree level study or to employment.
