Graduate training in anthropology emphasizes sociocultural anthropology, and gives secondary attention to archaeology. Studies of human biology fall mostly within the undergraduate curriculum.
The approach joins humanistic and social scientific methods in ethnographic research and aims to understand and defend cultural diversity. Regional depth is greatest for East, South and Southeast Asia, while the Americas, Europe and Africa are also covered. The program is individualized and interdisciplinary, with close links to area studies programs and joint faculty appointments in several other fields.
The PhD is administered by Graduate School at Cornell University and follows the academic standards set for that unit, so students should expect to meet both program and university expectations. Current course lists, degree requirements and academic policies are published in the university catalog, and applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process should contact the department or graduate field directly.
