The Doctor of Medicine at FAU's College of Medicine is organized around an integrated, patient-centered curriculum. Students study the basic sciences alongside real patient cases and clinical skills rather than in isolation, so that anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology are revisited throughout the courses.
Teaching combines problem-based learning in small groups, independent study, labs, simulations and focused lectures. Early coursework builds interviewing, physical examination and clinical reasoning skills, with standardized and simulated patients used for practice. From the spring of the first year, students begin caring for patients in the community under the supervision of physician preceptors.
The third year uses longitudinal integrated clerkship modules, giving students continuing relationships with patients, physicians and health systems. Class sizes are kept small, and competency assessments are woven into the curriculum.
