Howard's Graduate School runs an interdisciplinary doctorate in Pharmacology for students curious about how drugs work, what they do biochemically and physiologically, and how they cause harm, using laboratory, clinical and behavioral methods.
The program draws on medicine and on several sciences, among them physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry and bioinformatics. Lectures and laboratory research teach pharmacological principles along with measurement approaches from several disciplines, including cardiac imaging and nerve anatomy. Labs have equipment for growing cells, preparing drug formulations and chemical synthesis, and a seminar series brings in current research.
Faculty strengths include cardiovascular, kidney, cancer and hormone pharmacology, neuropharmacology, drug metabolism, drug abuse and toxicology. Alumni pursue academic research, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, public agencies, regulation and policy. A combined M.D. and Ph.D. is available. Study is full-time on campus.
