— it helps other students.
The history doctorate provides a framework for wide exposure to one general field, intensive training in a special research field, and a more limited second field. Students also train in research methods and develop language competence.
The program culminates in a dissertation of significant historical research and writing. A concentration focused on the medieval and renaissance period is available and requires a paper presentation. At least one course must come outside the home department.
Applicants submit the Graduate School of Creative fields and Science general application materials.
Prospective applicants should consult the full bulletin entry, which lists the required courses, a sample plan of study and the policies that apply to a given entry year, because details can change between cohorts and are best confirmed with the department directly. The entry also links to department pages and admissions guidance that go beyond what the bulletin summary covers.
