This short certificate covers the foundations of bookkeeping. Students come away with a working grasp of the accounting cycle and learn to use two tools that most small businesses rely on for their books, Excel spreadsheets and QuickBooks.
The three required courses cover basic accounting principles, spreadsheet skills and computerized accounting. Students learn to apply paired debit and credit entries and the period-end closing steps, build worksheets with text, numbers, functions, formulas and charts, and process financial information in both manual and computerized systems while producing the proper reports.
Completing the award can qualify graduates for office jobs, including bookkeeper, assistant in an accounting department, or entry-level financial analyst. The three courses are normally scheduled every semester, so a student can finish the whole certificate in a single term, either spring or fall. Each course needs a mark of C or higher, or a pass, to earn the certificate.
