Overview

Marine Deck Technology is a certificate program approved by the US Coast Guard. It pairs classroom study with hands-on training in shipboard operations, navigation, deck equipment maintenance, marine mathematics, communications and human relations. In the second and third quarters students gain experience aboard the college's training vessels. The academic portion is followed by an at-sea internship of 90 days on a commercial vessel. Graduates receive a certificate that the Coast Guard accepts in place of the written and practical examinations for certain endorsements, including National Able Seafarer, and they may count the academic work toward part of the sea time those endorsements require.
