MA/MS in Anthropology

Anthropology has run a master's program since the early 1950s. It is a research degree spanning the discipline's four subfields (archaeology, biological, linguistic and sociocultural), taking a holistic view of humanity and drawing on the humanities and the natural and social sciences. The department regards it as more than a terminal degree, since it suits both students heading toward the PhD and those entering careers that need only a master's. A large share of doctoral admits each year come from its own master's graduates. Each incoming student is assigned a faculty sponsor who serves as provisional advisor until a permanent advisor is found. Applicants submit a statement of purpose naming a personal and a professional goal and how each relates to anthropology.
