BA/BS in Anthropology

Anthropology is the university's only major centered on humanity as a whole. Students study human diversity through a historical and global perspective and see how people adapt across time and place. It attracts those who like social science, natural science or history but want a wider view. Learners explore several areas, including archaeology, which investigates the past through physical objects, and biological anthropology, which looks at human origins. Courses range from music and myth to medicine and ecology. Recognized strengths cover medical anthropology, comparative anatomy, migration, European cultural anthropology, and archaeology of both hemispheres. Opportunities beyond class include primate research in Costa Rica, excavation of a Roman fortress and a mock crime scene exercise. The College of Arts and Sciences offers the bachelor of arts, with combined routes to a medical anthropology master's or a social studies education master's, plus a minor.
