BA/BS in Ancient History

The Ancient History major covers Near Eastern and Mediterranean lands across the full span of antiquity. It is administered through the classics department, so students work with scholars of Greece, Rome and neighboring societies. Coursework begins with a core cluster in which students choose two introductory classes, such as surveys of the ancient Middle East, the Greeks, Rome or Mediterranean empires. Further clusters build depth through advanced seminars and related offerings in archaeology and classical studies. The rest of the degree is made up of the College's general education work plus open electives. Students with a strong record in the major and related courses may write a senior research paper for honors. A sample plan of study shows how the requirements spread across the years of the degree. Published requirements apply to students who start in fall 2026 or afterward, and final degree certification should be confirmed with the program office.
