Overview

English Name: Pasifika Communities University
Founded: 1965
Institution Type: University
Control Type: Private

Pasifika Communities University (PCU), in Suva, Fiji, began in 1965 as the Pacific Theological College, an ecumenical institution founded by Pacific Island churches to train clergy and lay leaders in theology at diploma, degree, Masters and doctoral levels.

The college opened for teaching in 1966 on its Vuya Road campus at Veiuto, overlooking Suva, and was accredited through the South Pacific Association of Theological Schools. It has since rebranded as Pasifika Communities University, broadening its mandate beyond theology into a 'Whole of Life' model of community-based learning rooted in Pacific contexts.

The university is organised into three academic Schools ('Bilums') covering Theology and Ecumenism, Pasifika Philosophies, Education and Sciences, and Ecology and Resilience Development; two Institutes ('Fa'area') for Leadership Development and Climate Indigenous Knowledge; and four Centres ('Poina'), including Gender and Social Justice, Distance Learning, and Interfaith engagement. Programmes span diplomas such as Pastoral Counselling through bachelor's, postgraduate diploma, master's and doctoral degrees.

PCU remains church-affiliated and governed by its member churches rather than the Fiji state, serving students from across the Pacific region while retaining its historic Suva campus.
