The nutrition programme offers a 4-year (8 semesters) full time course leading to a Bachelor Degree in Health Science (Nutrition). The offering of the programme is to cater for the needs for more nutritionists in Malaysia. The programme applies multidisciplinary approaches, and is taught by experts from basic sciences, food science, and dietetic, medical, social science and community services. The nutrition programme has the purpose in delivering knowledge in the basic human nutrition and focuses towards community nutrition in Malaysia. It provides an academic programme that is able to produce versatile graduates and in fulfilling the needs of the job market in the future. Students will be exposed to every aspect of food, dietary nutrient requirement, evaluation of nutritional status and issues of lifelong nutrition cycle. Students will also learn the problems of nutrition in a community and methods in overcoming these problems. The research component will also be taught and students are required to carry out a research project in the final year. This programme offers students a minimum of 100 credit units of courses for graduation, in which 65 units comprise of basic and core courses to be completed within 6 to 10 semesters. Students are given two options to follow for their course of studies: the minor-major or major-elective options. The programme focuses on fields in basic physics, namely mechanics, thermodynamics, electronics, quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and solid state physics. The School of Physics has academic staff who are experts in their fields and are competent in teaching all the courses offered. We offer elective courses in fields that have active ongoing research. The programme also caters for education students who wish to minor in physics.

This program provides a solid foundation in the various areas of mathematics: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. It is suitable for those who wish to further their studies to a higher level.

A course in Urban and Regional Planning at HBP involves a broad-based interdisciplinary approach with the purpose of producing urban and regional planners. Students who undertake this course will be trained to understand and apply planning theories and practices in a holistic manner. A physical planner deals with the planning of a physical development at a macro scale. These include working on the developments of new townships, regenerating and revitalising of existing urban and rural areas.

A key function of a quantity surveyor in the construction industry is to ensure efficiency in the financial management of building and civil engineering projects. The role of a quantity surveyor in the built environment requires them to work closely with various parties in a project such as professional design consultants, contractors and the developers. The continuous evaluation of the Quantity Surveying programme by the prestigious Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) and rigorous accreditation procedures by international associations such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) ensure that the students undergo an excellent programme that shapes creativity and innovative skills, sharpens professionalism and heightens confidence.

The Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) is one of the programmes offered by the School of Health Sciences, USM. This is a 4-year (8-semester) programme. The Bachelor of Health Science (Medical Radiation) is a 4-year (8 semesters) full time academic programme which has been offered since academic year 2001/2002 to students with qualification of A-level, STPM, matriculation, diploma in radiography or equivalent. The government of Malaysia has accredited this programme since 2004. This programme provides theoretical and practical training experiences, which will allow students to understand, able to explain and utilise ionising and non-ionising radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The offering of this programme is expected to assist in fulfilling the national requirements for trained personnel in the medical radiation science disciplines. This programme opens up career opportunities in the field of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy and medical radiation protection which required knowledge and skills in these areas in order to ensure the safety of the graduates, medical and health professionals, patients and members of the general public. The students are required to complete a total of 140 units for the purpose of graduation. The whole programme consists of 111 units of core courses, 15 units of university courses and 14 units of elective courses.

The objective of this programme is to produce graduates who are academically sound and able to function as the experts in the field of Exercise and Sports Science relevant to the requirement of the public and private sectors of the industry. It also takes cognisance of helping to achieve the national aspiration of creating healthy citizens. Students undergoing this programme are expected to acquire a high level of academic competency and knowledge that is at par with graduates of similar institutions within and outside the country. The uniqueness of this programme is that it allows the graduates to be flexible and capable of continued development in their specific career. This is based on the curriculum design which helps strengthen the knowledge of exercise and sports sciences while at the same time students will be exposed to the health and sporting events relevant to the field.

This programme is designed to produce audiologists who are knowledgeable and able to practice in the field of audiology to fulfill the needs of public and private sectors. Graduates will be awarded the Bachelor of Health Science (Audiology). This 4-year (8 semesters) programme includes the theoretical and practical (clinical) learning experience through our Core, University and Elective courses to equip the students to be competent as a practicing audiologist. Speech pathology is a health science profession that deals with the identification, assessment, diagnosis, intervention and management of communication disorders (disorders of language, speech sounds, fluency and voice) and swallowing problems. The professionals in this profession are known as Pegawai Pemulihan Perubatan (Pertuturan) in the government sector or Speech-Language Pathologist in the private sector. Speech Pathology Programme provides an academic program for students to obtain Bachelors of Health Science (Speech Pathology) as a qualification to work as thePegawai Pemulihan Perubatan (Pertuturan) or Speech-Language Pathologist. The main aim of Speech Pathology Programme is to produce professionals who have the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in speech pathology. Therefore, to achieve this main aim, the objectives of Speech Pathology Program are to: This is a 4-year professional programme that provides students with theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in speech pathology. Students will undertake programme core courses that cover topics on communication sciences and disorders, medical and health sciences, linguistics, education, psychology and research, plus several elective and university courses. The students will also have to accumulate 400 clinical educational hours during clinical years i.e. from Year 2 to Year 4 and complete a research project during the final year.

The Bachelor of Social Science programme is designed to provide a broad education in the social sciences with the aims of producing students who are knowledgeable and sensitive to, as well as capable of understanding and handling social issues and social problems innovatively. Students choose a major from one of these four social science disciplines: Anthropology and Sociology, Development Planning and Management, Economics and Political Science. Students also choose a minor that can be from any one of the minor packages offered by the school or from other schools in USM. Although each major has its own requirements, in general students take university-level courses, basic and common social science courses, major courses, minor courses and elective courses to complete a minimum 122 units for graduation.

The Dietetics programme is a full time programme offered over 4 years or 8 semesters. Graduates will be awarded the Bachelor of Health Science (Dietetics). The programme will help to fullfil the manpower needs for Dieticians in Malaysia. Students will be exposed to all aspects of food care and nutritional requirements for patients especially those requiring special diets as well as knowledge of community nutritional requirements. The graduates are expected to be able to function as dietitians as well as consultants in related fields and in the field of nutrition as therapeutic food.

The programme seeks to promote passion for product design while engaging students in research-based individual and group projects. Students are required to be able to design critically. As such, open-mindedness towards new ideas and informed risk are nurtured. The BFA Product Design programme explores the design processes through which a product is conceived, developed, fabricated, and marketed. Major emphasis allows the student to work towards acquiring control of the physical and visual constructs of a given concept allowing the desired content to be fully communicated. Ideations are developed through drawings and/or models, and then progress to full-size working pieces.

The approach to this programme is both conceptual and practical. The main aim is to provide well-rounded creative leadership to students in order to enable them to handle issues of the converging media as visionary professionals who possess the required know-how and professionalism in giving the breadth and depth to every challenge they encounter while infusing aesthetics and the latest technology at their best. The Design & New Media Technology programme prepares students to pursue careers in the field of computer-generated imagery for the information and entertainment industries. The industries produce special effects and animated characters for films; interactive media for the World Wide Web and for game development, and motion graphics for broadcast and feature titles. The Design & New Media Technology programme offers an innovative curriculum, professional-level computer facilities, and a supportive learning environment. With a strong industry focus, the undergraduate programme allows students to focus their studies in specific areas such as two-dimensional or three dimensional character animation, game development, experimental animation and interactivity or motion graphics. Each area of concentration builds upon a common set of digital design skills developed as a logical extension of foundation studies. Students are encouraged to take electives in other areas.

The primary educational objective of the Graphic Communication Design Department (GCDD) is to help students to focus on communicating their artistic interest and talent to create coherent and viable visual elements and images that general audience will understand and respond to. The course prepares student to use design in solving problems for clients creatively. Graphic Communication includes a market segment that embraces the technologies of printing, branding, advertising, publishing, packaging, electronic imaging and their allied industries, commonly referred to as the graphic design, graphic arts, print, advertising or imaging industries. Graphic Communication Design course is a technology-based, four-year degree program designed to provide learning and training in modern principles and practices used in the printing, branding, advertising, and graphic communication design industry. A comprehensive hands-on approach aligned with the design theories and cultural adaptations ensures that students receive a marketable set of skills within a positive learning environment. The goal of the program is to help the student develop personal and professional competencies in communications, design thinking, problem solving, teamwork, electronic pre-press, production technologies, and post-press operations that will help lead to successful employment. The program structure is in line with the national skills standards for the graphic communication design and printing industry. Program topics include: design thinking, typography, branding process, visual communication, problem solving, basic layout & design, image construction, presentation skills, 2D & 3D drawing, cross cultural design, design theory, design management and interactive multimedia. Students are exposed to the computer software applications commonly used in this industry, such as page layout, design, image manipulation, and computer graphics. Other topics include: digital photography, industry placement, digital scanning and printing, and basic electronic pre-press, offset press operation, post-press operation skills, paper technology and screen-printing. Our fleet of equipment is constantly being modernized to offer an expanded range of technical skills. Some of our equipment and new additions include: Graphic Studio Room, Computer Lab, Printing Studio, Drawing Studio, Photography Studio (under construction), Paper Making Studio, Performance Hall, Open Air Space Projector and Ceramic Studio. A practiced design studio – UDesign Lab, is also running under the management of the School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Graphic Communication Design Club (GCDC) is also open for university’s student participation each semester to enhance the Graphic Communication students to run and manage independently design project throughout the year.

Food Science involves studying the physical, biological, and chemical composition of food along with learning the fundamental concepts of food processing. Medical Physics is a rapidly expanding discipline which involves the application of physics-based principles and techniques to matters of medical diagnosis and treatment. The subject initially focused on the use of ionising radiations in both diagnostic and therapeutic applications, but nowadays Medical Physics has expanded to embrace a very wide spectrum of physics, including ultrasonics, lasers and optics, magnetism and electronics, with applications in a wide range of medical and surgical procedures. The School offers a 3 year Honours Degree programmes in Applied Physics with Medical Physics; also a 1 year or 2 years full-time M.Sc. programme in Medical Physics. Agrobiology This programme offers undergraduate studies leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Agrobiology which emphasizes on multidisciplinary approach in the field of plant pathology and entomology related to other fields such as environment, soil science, botany, physiology microbiology, plant diversity biotechnology and ecology. The main objective of this programme is the application of scientific approaches leading to high agricultural productivity and sustainability.Academic staffs consist of experts in the fields of soil fertility, plant health and crop protection. There are expertise in plant pathogenic fungi, biological nitrogen fixers, biocontrol of plant diseases, composting and vermiculture technology. Aquatic biology and environmental biology are therefore very closely related. Academic personnel in the School of Biological Sciences doing research related to Aquatic Biology are also involved in supervising postgraduate students working on Environmental Biology-related research topics. For this reason, the thrust areas of Aquatic Biology and Environmental Biology are both coordinated under the same Programme Chairperson and comes under the AQEN Bio (AQuatic & ENvironmental Biology) group. Entomology & Parasitology The Entomology and Parasitology programme is important for the development of the nation. Malaysia lies in a tropical zone, and thus is often invaded by various vectorborne diseases (especially mosquitoes and housefl ies) which are capable of transmitting diseases like malaria, dengue, fi lariasis, Japanese encephalitis and typhoid. The strategy for the control of such diseases is not through medication of sick patients, but through the reduction in the source of infection of the disease, which is often the mosquitoes and other vectors. The ability to effectively control the vectors is only possible through extensive knowledge on the biology and the behaviour of those vectors. Extensive urbanization brings an imbalance between infrastructural development and human activities towards the natural habitats, and this has resulted in the increase of insects and urban pest population like cockroaches, ants, termites, rats, crows etc. Thus, the biology and management of vector and parasite programme will expose students to various vectors and parasites, as well as their life cycle patterns, the ecology and behaviour, so as to fully comprehend their epidemiology before effective control strategies can be formulated for the reduction of such diseases. Vector-borne diseases like malaria, fi lariasis, and dengue are still responsible for the high incidence of morbidity and mortality in many tropical countries, including Malaysia. Thus through this program, students will have a better understanding of the biology of the vectors like mosquitoes and fl ies, as well as their relationship with the transmitted parasites or pathogens. Graduates are able to work in parasitology research, veterinary, health and academia. Other options of careers include positions in urban as well as agricultural pest control companies. Biotechnology Biotechnology, an area of applied biology, involves the practical application of cells or its components in manufacturing and service industries. Biotechnology is multidisciplinary, involving the integration of knowledge from microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, chemistry as well as chemical and process engineering. This programme aims to develop a strong understanding in cellular biology involving microbiology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology of biocatalysts: This will then be followed with discussion on modern approaches in the modifi cation of the characteristics of biocatalysts followed by product formation through fermentation and bioconversions. The Bachelor of Education (Special Education) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme designed to produce teachers who will be proficient in teaching students with disabilities. The course will cover three disability areas- learning disabilities, visual impairment and hearing impairment.

The Bachelor of Education (TESOL) with Honours degree programme is a four-year professional programme aimed at producing English teachers to teach English as a Second Language in Malaysian secondary schools. In this programme, the professional and pedagogical components are under the School of Educational Studies while the subject-matter component is under the School of Humanities. The students take multimedia courses as their minor. These are offered by the Centre for Instructional Technology and Multimedia.

Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Engineering)(Hons)

The Chemical Engineering curriculum is developed in accordance with the requirements and guidelines provided by the Engineering Accreditation Council (AEC) under the Board of Engineers, Malaysia. The school offers a 4-year program to the level of the award of the Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) with Honours leading to the following specialized fields : The curriculum that involves all the three specializations has a good balance in terms of knowledge of science and engineering throughout the 4-year curriculum. Courses related to the specialized fields are offered during third and fourth years.The exposures to the real industrial practices have been embedded through the industrial training and other industrial involvements. Students are required to undergo industrial training for at least 10 weeks in different industries. It gives exposure to the students about their role as a chemical engineer. In addition, students will also be exposed to chemical-related industries through industrial visits and lectures by industry. During their final year of study, students will perform plant design projects in groups. Here they will use all the knowledge of chemical engineering that they acquired during the previous learning and training.The students are also required to conduct research in their final year. This provides ample opportunities for students to design and build a new experimental system in laboratories as well as the use of computers. The Final Year Project requires the collection of information about the progress in existing technology or a new technology.To equip students to face the world of information technology, they are also trained to use a variety of software and programming languages, either as a special subject or as part of the courses offered. Students are also required to follow some lessons related to business and management as measures to prepare them to become one of the leaders of an organization in the future.

Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) (Civil Engineering) is 4 years programme and aims to produce qualified civil engineers who are competent, creative, highly dedicated graduates and able to find solutions to diverse problems through innovative thinking. The School has formally adopted the Outcome Based Education (OBE) system since the 2006/2007 academic session to fulfil the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) requirements for undergraduate engineering programme in Malaysia.

The areas to be undertaken by students enrolled in this programme include Power Generation (both conventional and unconventional methods), Power Transmission, Power Distribution and Power Consumption, Electrical Machines, Electrical Analysis, Electrical Design and Applications, Power System Stability and Power Electronics.

Fine Art is a vital form of cultural expression that enriches our lives and challenges our views of the world. We rely on the arts to enrich our lives as well as to challenge our interpretation of the world around us. The discipline of Fine Arts invites us to expand our vision through creative experimentation and the unique possibilities of communicating with our surroundings through art. The Fine Art programme at USM's School of the Arts offers the opportunity for students to concentrate and explore their specific area of interest via traditional and new forms of art. Explorations in new art forms such as media and electronic arts enable students to further develop conceptual thinking and creative possibilities presented by rapidly expanding technology. The Fine Art degree programme is designed to present a number of distinguished approaches to art making and analysis on a broad overview of technique, theory, and history. The Fine Arts programme encourages independent thinking, self-motivation, and an experimental approach to studio practices. Courses are offered in art history, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and printmaking. An integral part of the Fine Art major's undergraduate final year asessment is Projek Seni (Final Art Project) that focuses on students' area of concentration, culminating in an exhibition on campus at the end of the academic year

Initially, the Bachelor of Management degree had 6 areas of specialization namely Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Operations Management, Organisational Behavior and Islamic Finance. The nation’s critical call for qualified accountants and a growing need for a full fledge Accounting Program led the School of Management to offer the Bachelor of Accounting degree with effect from the 1999/2000 academic session. The entire curriculum for this degree was designed in close collaboration and consultation with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and many other professional accounting bodies. The MIA is the professional quality control association in the field of accounting and MIA is a member of the International Accounting Standards Board responsible for studying accounting standards besides current local and international accounting issues. These efforts culminated in the accreditation of the Accountancy Program by the MIA on the 30th of September 2000. This recognition means that the graduates will be accepted as Certified Accountants after gaining 3 years working experience at an accounting firm or an industry. As such, graduates of the program can apply to become Chartered Accountants after gaining a 3-year working experience in the field of accounting or a related field under MIA's CARE program. With MIA’s input, the Bachelor of Accounting degree program offered by the School of Management has successfully combined the expertise and experience of both accounting professionals as well as accounting academics. This has resulted in the enhancement of the program to world standards. Apart from the MIA’s involvement, the program also receives feedback from members of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Accountants [MICPA], representatives of the Department of the National Accountants and as well as representatives of renowned audit firms. As quality education is the School of Management's ultimate objective, various other professional bodies were invited to assess its curricula and instructional strategies. Other professional bodies like MICPA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA AUSTRALIA, and ICAEW have followed suit in accrediting the School of Management’s Accounting Program. With effect from the 2002/2003 Academic Session, students need to complete their studies in 4 years. The 4-year curriculum has been examined by audit firms, management consultants, company managers and financial consultants. It is necessary to ensure that the curriculum content can fulfill market needs. The efforts and determination of the entire School of Management's faculty bared success when in 2003; the Ministry of Education bestowed the honor of being the best School of Business Management and Accounting in the country. This recognition was based on an academic audit undertaken by a few professors from a consortium of the Institutes of Higher Learning New Zealand in collaboration with a local audit firm, Atarik Kamil and Company. Most recently, the School of Management was accorded three (3) Palms, as an “Excellent Business School” by Eduniversal World Business School Ranking for three years in a row (2010, 2011, and 2012).

Kimia Analisis adalah merupakan bidang Kimia yang menghasilkan graduan yang bukan sahaja mantap daripada segi pengetahuan kimianya tetapi juga dilengkapi dengan sifat yang membolehkan mereka mengadaptasi keadaan persekitaran kerja yang dinamik dan perkembangan yang cepat, mempunyai kemahiran yang tinggi, perilaku yang baik dan mempunyai amalan kerja yang baik yang sepadan dengan keperluan sektor awam dan industri. Program ini juga dapat membuatkan pemikiran graduan berubah dari masa ke semasa untuk menyesuaikan dengan keadaan persekitaran yang tidak dijangka pada masa hadapan.

The program goal is to produce competent Statisticians who are able to conduct research and development in industries as well as in the service sector. In this program, students are given training that focuses on the application of statistics in areas such as management, medicine, finance and data analysis. Computer skills in analyzing data (for example: financial, industrial and medical data) and making appropriate decisions and conclusions in solving problems are also given emphasis.

Geophysics is the field of science dedicated to studying the Earth's structure, motion, rocks, and minerals. It involves the application of physical laws and principles to a study of the Earth and other astronomical bodies. Geophysical studies employ physical measurements and mathematical models to explore and analyze the structure and dynamics of the solid earth and similar bodies, and their fluid content. The Geophysics Group conducts research in a wide variety of areas mostly related to applied geophysics and geosciences. Major research areas can be grouped into Atmospheric and Meteorological Science, Engineering and Environmental Geophysics, Petroleum Geoscience and Reservoir Petrophysics, Nearshore Oceanographic and Coastal Processes.

Environmental and Occupational Health Programme is offered by the School of Health Sciences, as a full time 4 years (8 semesters) undergraduate academic programme. Students will be awarded the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Environmental and Occupational Health) upon completion of the programme. Environmental and Occupational Health Programme is an integrative academic programme involves interdisciplinary field. The tools of science and technology are used to solve human health problems related to the environment and occupational issues. Knowledge in the field of environment and occupational health will serve as a competitive advantage that enables the graduates to work effectively with medical professionals involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with environmental and occupational related problems. The designation and development of the programme is aimed to fulfill the specific needs of potential employers, regulators and modern society in general. The students will be trained on international quality management systems, including ISO9001, ISO14001, OSHAS18000, ILO-OSH 2001 and MS 1722: 2003.
