Founded 1991 as Donetsk State University`s Mariupol School of Humanities, at the initiative of Mariupol National and Cultural Greek Community coupled with Mariupol city council.

Re-organization and transformed into Mariupol Humanities Institute of Donetsk State University 1993. Acquired university status 2004 under the Ordinance of the Cabinet of Ministers as of June 17 2004 No 401-p.

Renamed into Mariupol State University (MSU) 2010. Evacuated from Mariopol to Kyiv since May 2022.
