The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (from 2025) is equivalent in size and demand to one A level on the UCAS tariff.

SFW caps maintenance support differently for each location, with London receiving the highest combined package.

Maximum grant applies when household income is £18,370 or less. The grant tapers to zero around £59,200; above that you can still take the minimum loan.

How It Works

The Welsh Grant-First Model (2025/26)

Wales is the only UK nation that guarantees a substantial non-repayable Welsh Government Learning Grant on top of a maintenance loan. SFW caps the total maintenance package and adjusts the grant-to-loan split based on household income.

  • At home: up to £10,480 total — max grant £6,885
  • Away (outside London): up to £12,345 — max grant £8,100
  • Away (London): up to £15,415 — max grant £10,124
  • Maximum grant when household income ≤ £18,370; grant tapers to a guaranteed minimum of £1,000 at higher incomes.

Welsh Bacc UCAS Tariff Mapping

The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (from Summer 2025, replacing the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate) is graded A*–E and sits on the standard UCAS tariff at exactly the same value as one A-level: A*=56, A=48, B=40, C=32, D=24, E=16 points.

Many Welsh universities (e.g. Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth) explicitly accept it as the third subject in a 3-A-level offer. English Russell Group universities vary — always check the specific course offer wording.
