Two cities, two cost bases
Calgary and Edmonton both sit well below Toronto and Vancouver on rent, and Edmonton runs cheaper than Calgary on most lines. The gap most students underestimate is not rent. It is what a Prairie winter costs to dress and travel through, on top of the usual budget categories.
Rent in Calgary and Edmonton
Rentals.ca measured average asking rent across all unit sizes at $1,815 a month in Calgary and $1,488 a month in Edmonton in February 2026 (Rentals.ca National Rent Report ). Both numbers put Alberta's two largest student cities among the more affordable major markets in the country, well under Toronto, Vancouver or Ottawa.

On-campus residence costs
The University of Calgary's 2025-26 residence rates list a shared room with a meal plan at $9,207 to $10,157 for the year, and a single room at $13,144 to $14,094 (University of Calgary ). Spread across an eight-month residence contract, that works out to roughly $1,150 to $1,270 a month for a shared room, or $1,640 to $1,760 a month for a single.
Transit: U-Pass costs
University and college students in Calgary, including those at the University of Calgary, SAIT and Mount Royal, pay a Calgary Transit U-Pass fee that has recently run about $175 a semester. Confirm the current rate with Calgary Transit or your student union before budgeting. At MacEwan University in Edmonton, the U-Pass costs $45 a month for the 2025-26 academic year (City of Edmonton ). Students at the University of Alberta pay a similar mandatory U-Pass fee bundled into their student charges each semester. Check your own institution's fee schedule for the exact current figure, since it is negotiated separately from MacEwan's rate.
The cost students from milder regions miss
A Prairie winter runs colder and longer than most new students expect, and it adds a real cost that does not show up in a rent-and-groceries budget. A proper insulated winter coat and waterproof boots are not optional here, and buying them once, early in the term, from a store that sells for actual Alberta winters, works out cheaper than replacing a lighter coat partway through January. If you plan to drive, budget for a block heater or an idle-reduction device and higher winter fuel and maintenance costs.

These totals stack rent, a U-Pass or transit pass, groceries, phone, utilities and personal spending. Add a one-time allowance in your first term for winter clothing if you are moving from a milder climate.
