TL;DR

Nurses and nurse practitioners working in an eligible rural or remote community get up to $30,000 in Canada Student Loan forgiveness over 5 years, on top of any provincial incentives.

  • 💵 Year 1 forgives $4,000, rising to $8,000 in Year 5, for a $30,000 total maximum.

  • 🎓 Registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered practical nurses, licensed practical nurses, and registered psychiatric nurses all qualify.

  • 🏠 Eligible communities are a rural area or a population centre of 30,000 people or fewer, checked through a postal code lookup tool.

  • ⏱️ You need 12 consecutive months of practice and at least 400 hours of in-person service, then 90 days to apply.

Canada Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses and Nurse Practitioners in Underserved Communities

What the program forgives

The federal Canada Student Loan forgiveness program cancels part of your student loan balance for each year you work as a nurse or nurse practitioner in an eligible rural or remote community. The schedule, published by Employment and Social Development Canada , applies only to the federal portion of your Canada Student Loan.

Year of serviceAmount forgiven
Year 1$4,000
Year 2$5,000
Year 3$6,000
Year 4$7,000
Year 5$8,000

Stay 5 qualifying years in eligible communities and the program forgives $30,000 in total. Years do not need to be at the same location or run back to back, but each one must meet the community and service rules on its own.

Which nursing designations qualify

The nursing track covers nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, licensed practical nurses, and registered psychiatric nurses. Your provincial regulator's licence determines which designation you hold, so check that your registration matches one of these categories before you count on the program.

Midwives, teachers, social workers, and physiotherapists sit in the same $30,000 forgiveness tier as nurses under the program, each on their own schedule of $4,000 rising to $8,000 across 5 years. Family doctors, dentists, psychologists, and pharmacists sit in a higher tier with a $60,000 maximum instead.

How rural and remote status is determined

Since November 6, 2024, an eligible community is a rural area, or a population centre with no more than 30,000 people. Use the postal code lookup tool to confirm your practice location before you rely on a year toward forgiveness.

For nurses, the earlier eligibility definition, which excluded metropolitan areas and provincial capitals, stays in force until Statistics Canada finishes applying the 2026 census results. A community that reads as rural in conversation does not always pass the official population test, so check the tool for your exact address rather than a nearby town.

Service requirements before you apply

  • Work in an eligible nursing role in an eligible community for 12 consecutive months.

  • Provide a minimum of 400 hours of in-person service during that year.

  • Keep your Canada Student Loan in good standing throughout the qualifying period.

How and when to apply

Apply within 90 days of completing each qualifying year. NSLSC treats every year as a separate application, so a nurse practitioner planning to stay 3 or more years should apply after each one rather than waiting until the placement ends. Missing the 90 day window forfeits forgiveness for that specific year, even with continuous eligible service.

Stack with repayment assistance

Loan forgiveness cuts your balance directly. If your payments are tight while you build up qualifying years, the Repayment Assistance Plan lowers what you owe on the remaining balance in the meantime. Check with your province too, since forgiveness under this federal program covers only the federal share of your student loan, and some provinces run their own rural nursing incentives on top of it.

A worked example over 3 years

Say you complete 3 qualifying years as a registered nurse in an eligible community. Year 1 forgives $4,000, Year 2 forgives $5,000, and Year 3 forgives $6,000, for $15,000 forgiven against your federal loan balance so far. Stay a full 5 years and the total reaches the $30,000 maximum for this tier.

If you relocate between qualifying years

Community eligibility is checked separately for each year you claim. If you move from one rural or remote posting to another, confirm the new location also meets the population centre definition on the postal code lookup tool before you count that year toward forgiveness. A move to a larger centre partway through your career ends your eligibility for future years even if earlier years already qualified.

New graduates and internationally educated nurses

A newly registered nurse starts counting qualifying years as soon as licensure and employment in an eligible community begin, provided the loan is in good standing. If you trained outside Canada, your provincial nursing regulator determines your registration category, and that registration is what NSLSC checks against the eligible designations, not your country of training.

What forgiveness looks like on your loan

Forgiveness reduces your federal Canada Student Loan principal directly, it does not arrive as a cash payment to you. If you are also making payments or sit on the Repayment Assistance Plan while your years accumulate, each approved forgiveness year lowers what you owe going forward.

Keep your employer records handy

Your employer confirms your work location and hours when you apply, so keep pay stubs, shift schedules, or a letter from your health authority on hand for each qualifying year. Missing documentation is the most common reason an otherwise eligible application takes longer to process.

Weighing a short placement against a longer one

Because the forgiveness amount grows each year, a nurse weighing a 2 year rural contract against a 5 year one should factor in that Year 5 forgives twice what Year 1 does. Leaving after 2 years forgives $9,000 total, while staying the full 5 years forgives $30,000, so the later years carry more weight in the running total.
