Family doctors and family medicine residents working in an eligible rural or remote community get up to $60,000 in Canada Student Loan forgiveness over 5 years. The amount grows each year you stay.
💵 Year 1 forgives $8,000, rising to $16,000 in Year 5, for a $60,000 total maximum.
🏠 Eligible communities are a rural area or a population centre of 30,000 people or fewer, checked through a postal code lookup tool.
⏱️ You need 12 consecutive months of practice and at least 400 hours of in-person service before applying.
📩 Apply within 90 days of finishing each qualifying year, and reapply every year you want the next year's forgiveness.
What the program forgives
The federal Canada Student Loan forgiveness program cancels part of your student loan balance for each year you work as a family doctor or family medicine resident in an eligible rural or remote community. Forgiveness for this group runs on the Employment and Social Development Canada schedule shown below, and it applies only to the federal portion of your Canada Student Loan.
| Year of service | Amount forgiven |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | $8,000 |
| Year 2 | $10,000 |
| Year 3 | $12,000 |
| Year 4 | $14,000 |
| Year 5 | $16,000 |
Complete all 5 years in an eligible community and the program forgives $60,000 in total. You do not need to complete the years consecutively at the same location, but each qualifying year must be at an eligible community and reported on time.
Who counts as a family doctor for this program
The program covers licensed family doctors and family medicine residents. It runs alongside a separate track for nurses and nurse practitioners, and the government has been expanding the program to more professions, so confirm the current list and effective dates on canada.ca before relying on this.
What counts as an eligible community
Since November 6, 2024, an eligible community is a rural area, or a population centre with no more than 30,000 people. Check your practice location against the postal code lookup tool before you count on a year toward forgiveness, since a community that looks rural on a map does not always meet the population definition.
The previous eligibility definition, which excluded metropolitan areas and provincial capitals, still applies to doctors and nurses until Statistics Canada finishes applying results from the 2026 census. Confirm your specific location on the official tool rather than assuming eligibility from the general description.
Service requirements before you apply
Work in an eligible occupation and community for 12 consecutive months.
Provide a minimum of 400 hours of in-person service during that year.
Keep your Canada Student Loan in good standing throughout the qualifying period.
How and when to apply
Apply within 90 days of completing each qualifying year of service. NSLSC needs a new application for every year you want forgiven, so build the 90 day deadline into your calendar as soon as you start a rural placement. Missing that window means losing forgiveness for that year even if you kept practising in an eligible community.
If you plan to stay past one year, reapply annually rather than waiting until you leave the community. Each year stands as its own qualifying period with its own 90 day application deadline.
Combine with other repayment help
Loan forgiveness reduces your balance directly, and it works alongside other federal supports such as the Repayment Assistance Plan if your payments are still difficult to manage between forgiveness applications. Check your provincial student loan program too, since Canada Student Loan forgiveness only touches the federal share of your debt and some provinces run separate incentives for rural physicians.
A worked example over 3 years
Say you complete 3 qualifying years as a family doctor in an eligible community. Year 1 forgives $8,000, Year 2 forgives $10,000, and Year 3 forgives $12,000, for $30,000 forgiven against your federal loan balance so far. Stay a full 5 years and the total reaches the $60,000 maximum. Each year stands as its own application, so the running total grows only as you submit and NSLSC approves each one.
If you relocate between qualifying years
Community eligibility is checked separately for each year you claim, not once at the start. If you move from one rural placement to another, confirm the new location also meets the population centre definition on the postal code lookup tool before you count that year toward forgiveness. A move to a larger centre partway through your practice ends your eligibility for future years even if earlier years already qualified.
Where residents fit in
Family medicine residents qualify alongside licensed family doctors under the same $60,000 schedule. A resident completing rural rotations should track hours and location carefully during residency, since the 400 hour and 12 month requirements apply the same way regardless of whether you hold full licensure yet.
What forgiveness looks like on your loan
Forgiveness reduces your federal Canada Student Loan principal directly, it does not arrive as a cash payment to you. If you are also making payments or sit on the Repayment Assistance Plan while your years accumulate, each approved forgiveness year lowers what you owe going forward, which shortens your remaining repayment period once your balance recalculates.
Keep your employer records handy
Your employer or health authority confirms your work location and hours when you apply, so keep pay stubs, work schedules, or a letter from your practice on hand for each qualifying year. A gap in your own records slows down an application that otherwise meets every requirement.
Plan your placement around the schedule
Since the forgiveness amount grows each year, a doctor weighing a short rural placement against a longer one should factor in that Year 5 forgives twice what Year 1 does. Leaving after 2 years forgives $18,000 total, while staying the full 5 years forgives $60,000, so the later years carry more weight in the total than the earlier ones.
