Gates Cambridge Scholarship for Canadian Graduate Applicants

What the Scholarship Pays For

Gates Cambridge funds around 80 new scholars at the University of Cambridge every year, split into a US round of about 25 places and an international round of about 55 places that Canadian applicants use. About two-thirds of scholars go on to a PhD, and PhD funding runs for up to four years. The award covers your University Composition Fee in full, plus a maintenance allowance set at £22,050 for 12 months at the 2025-26 rate, paid pro rata for courses shorter than a year.

The scholarship also pays for one economy return flight to Cambridge and back, your UK visa fees, and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Scholars who need more support apply separately for academic development funding of £500 to £2,000 a year, a dependent children allowance of up to £12,184 for one child or £17,375 for two or more, fieldwork grants, parental leave funding, and a hardship fund. The scholarship does not cover lab bench fees or equipment costs, which stay with your Cambridge department.

Who Qualifies

You qualify by citizenship first: Gates Cambridge is open to any citizen of a country outside the UK , so Canadians apply on equal footing with every other nationality. You need an offer or an application in progress for a full-time PhD, a full-time MLitt, or most one-year postgraduate courses at Cambridge. A part-time PhD pilot route also qualifies.

The scholarship does not fund undergraduate degrees, the MASt, other part-time courses, or professional programs such as the MBA, EMBA, MFin, PGCE, or medical-related courses. If you already study at Cambridge, you cannot apply for funding toward your current course, but you apply when you move to a new degree.

Application Timeline

Applications for 2026/7 entry are already closed. For entry in the 2027/8 academic year, US citizens resident in the US apply through a single date, Wednesday 14 October 2026 . Every other eligible applicant, including Canadians, applies by whichever deadline their chosen course sets in the Cambridge Course Directory: either Tuesday 8 December 2026 or Wednesday 6 January 2027.

Apply for your Cambridge course first through the standard graduate admissions system and tick the box to be considered for Gates Cambridge funding in the same application. There is no separate scholarship form to submit ahead of that course deadline.

What Reviewers Look For

Selection weighs your academic record alongside the Gates Cambridge criteria of leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Your personal statement and references need to speak to both sides: solid evidence you handle the research or coursework, and a track record of using your time, through work, volunteering, research, or campus involvement, to make a difference beyond your own results.

Line up your references early. Cambridge academic references carry more weight when they come from people who supervised your recent research or senior coursework directly, so ask supervisors who speak to specific projects rather than general character.

The Interview Stage

Cambridge departments assess you for admission first, then Gates Cambridge shortlists among admitted or conditionally admitted applicants for a scholarship interview. Not every strong applicant reaches interview, since the shortlist size responds to how many strong files come in that year. If you get invited, use the interview to talk specifically about your leadership and impact record rather than repeating your personal statement.

Building a Canadian Application

Start with your Cambridge course choice, since your funding deadline depends on it. Check the specific department's admissions page for its own deadline, then work backward to leave time for transcripts from your Canadian university, English test scores if your undergraduate teaching language needs confirming, and two or three strong references.

Budget several weeks for your personal statement. Gates Cambridge readers see thousands of strong academic files, so the leadership and impact half of your statement, not just your grades, separates a Canadian PhD or master's applicant from the rest of the international round.

Documents to Gather Early

  • Official transcripts from every Canadian university or CEGEP you attended

  • A near-final personal statement draft covering both academic fit and your leadership and impact record

  • Two or three academic references who know your recent work directly

  • Proof of English proficiency if your prior teaching language was not English

If Gates Cambridge Doesn't Come Through

Applying for Gates Cambridge does not use up your other options. Cambridge runs a separate funder, the Cambridge Trust , which offers full-cost and part-cost scholarships to students from a long list of countries that includes Canada, across undergraduate, master's, and PhD study. Many Cambridge colleges and departments also hold their own smaller awards, so check your college's funding page once you hold an offer. Losing out on Gates Cambridge in a competitive international round does not reflect a weak application. It reflects a fixed number of places against a global applicant pool, so keep a shortlist of backup funding lined up before results come out rather than after.
