How to Apply to University and College in Yukon: Steps, Deadlines and Requirements

Where you apply

Yukon has one public post-secondary institution, Yukon University , so you apply directly through its own online application rather than through a shared provincial application centre like OUAC in Ontario or ApplyAlberta. Create an account, pick your program, and submit your application and supporting documents through that same portal.

The Office of the Registrar processes every application, whether you apply from a Yukon high school, a CEGEP, another Canadian province, or from outside Canada. If you are coming from a CEGEP in Quebec or a high school system in another province, your transcript is evaluated against the same program prerequisites as a Yukon applicant. Contact admissions directly if you are unsure how a specific CEGEP program or course maps onto a Yukon University prerequisite, rather than guessing and applying anyway.

Programs delivered at community campuses outside Whitehorse use the same central application and the same Office of the Registrar. You do not submit a separate application for a different Yukon location, only for a different program.

When applications open and close

Yukon University opens general applications for the next intake year roughly a year ahead. For the 2026-27 cycle, applications for Winter 2027 and Fall 2027 intakes for Canadian and permanent resident applicants opened on October 1, 2026, once the Fall 2026 intake had closed. International applicants follow a similar pattern, with their own opening dates for Winter and Spring intakes.

General deadlines vary by intake, and individual programs can set their own earlier cutoff, commonly falling between March and May for competitive or limited enrollment programs such as health and trades. Check the specific program page rather than relying on a single territory wide deadline.

What you need before you apply

• Your high school or previous post-secondary transcripts, requested early since transcript requests can take time to process at your sending school

• The specific prerequisite courses and minimum grades your program lists on its own page. Yukon's K-12 system follows the British Columbia curriculum, so admission from a Yukon high school is generally assessed against BC-equivalent graduation requirements

• Any program specific supplementary requirement, such as a portfolio, interview or reference, listed on that program's page

• Proof of English proficiency if your previous instruction was not in English

• A non refundable application fee, paid when you submit. Check the current amount on the application portal before you apply

After you apply: processing and your offer

Once your application and documents are complete, processing takes up to 4 weeks for both Canadian/permanent resident and international applicants. You receive a Letter of Acceptance once a decision is made. Hold onto that letter. You need it to register for courses, arrange housing, and, for international students, to apply for a study permit.

Respond to your offer by whatever confirmation deadline is stated in your acceptance package. Missing it can mean losing your seat in a limited enrollment program.

If you are applying from outside Canada, start your study permit application as soon as your Letter of Acceptance arrives. Study permit processing runs on its own timeline, separate from Yukon University's admission processing, and it can take longer than the up to 4 weeks the university itself needs to assess your application.

If you are not ready for a full program

Two options let you start without a complete program application. Open Studies lets you register for up to 6 credits a term as an individual course taker, no program acceptance required, which works if you want to raise a low average, test a subject, or keep momentum while you decide on a program. Yukon high school students can also use Dual Credit to take up to 2 tuition free university courses a year while still in high school.

Applying to a trade or apprenticeship program

Trades programs at Yukon University work alongside Yukon's apprenticeship system rather than as a standalone academic application. In most Canadian trades, you need an employer willing to sponsor you and you register as an apprentice with the territorial apprenticeship authority, then attend technical training blocks at Yukon University as part of that registered apprenticeship. If you do not have an employer sponsor lined up yet, contact Yukon University's Trades and Apprenticeships school before you apply, since the application path differs from a standard diploma or degree program.

Practical tips for Yukon applicants

• Apply as soon as the cycle opens rather than close to a program's specific deadline, since processing takes weeks and some programs fill before the general deadline

• Confirm your program's intake pattern first. Some trades and health programs admit once a year on a cohort schedule rather than every term
