Four funding routes cover most students in Indonesia: LPDP for master's and doctoral study, KIP Kuliah for low income undergraduates, university fee reductions, and private or corporate scholarships. Together they can cover tuition, a monthly living allowance, and sometimes research or insurance costs.
🎓 LPDP: master's and PhD, home or abroad, tuition plus living costs
💵 KIP Kuliah: full tuition and Rp800,000-1,400,000 a month for eligible low income students
📩 University aid: merit and need-based UKT reductions
🏠 Private scholarships: Djarum, Tanoto, Bank Indonesia and similar foundations
⏱️ LPDP runs in yearly batches. Apply as soon as a batch opens
LPDP: the flagship government scholarship
LPDP (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan, the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education) is the government's main scholarship for master's and doctoral study, funded from a state education endowment and run under the Ministry of Finance. It funds study at Indonesian universities and at institutions abroad, so you can use it whether you stay home or go overseas for your postgraduate degree.
To qualify you need to be an Indonesian citizen, hold a completed diploma or bachelor's degree for a master's application (or a master's degree for a doctoral application), and meet an English test score requirement, typically IELTS 6.5 for master's programs and IELTS 7.0 for doctoral programs taken within the two years before you apply. Coverage includes tuition and registration fees, books and research costs, plus a monthly living allowance, health insurance, visa costs and travel for students going abroad, according to both IDP's LPDP overview and Cranfield University's own LPDP funding page , which lists it among the scholarships it accepts from Indonesian applicants.
LPDP opens registration in batches through the year rather than once. For the 2026 cycle, Batch 1 registration opened in the second half of January and closed at the end of February, with Cranfield noting a deadline around 27 February 2026 for that round. Because exact dates shift every year, check the LPDP website directly before you plan around a specific date, and apply in the earliest batch you qualify for since later batches can have fewer places left.
KIP Kuliah: aid for low income undergraduates
KIP Kuliah (Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah) is a separate government program for undergraduate students from low income families, run by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. You qualify by holding a KIP or Kartu Keluarga Sejahtera card, being registered in the national socio-economic data system (DTSEN) at decile 4 or below, coming from a welfare institution, or having combined parental income below your province's minimum wage, according to the official KIP Kuliah guide . You also need to be a recent high school graduate, either finishing this year or within the two years before, and pass a public or private university's regular entrance selection.
KIP Kuliah covers your full tuition at universities with A/Excellent or B/Very Good accreditation, paid directly to the institution, so you owe nothing to the university once accepted. On top of that it pays a monthly living allowance of Rp800,000 to Rp1,400,000, with the exact amount set by the cost of living in your university's region. You apply through the official KIP Kuliah portal after you have a place at a university, and the ministry announces recipients once your enrollment is confirmed.
| LPDP | KIP Kuliah | |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Master's, doctoral | Undergraduate |
| Study location | Indonesia or abroad | Indonesia only |
| Main eligibility | Age limit, GPA, English test | Low income, recent high school graduate |
| Covers | Tuition, living costs, research, insurance | Tuition, monthly living allowance |
University-level financial aid
Beyond national programs, most public universities reduce or waive UKT for students who fall into the lowest income tiers, and many private universities run their own merit scholarships that cut tuition for top scorers, athletes, or students with strong extracurricular records. Ask your target university's financial aid or kemahasiswaan (student affairs) office directly, since eligibility rules and the size of the reduction differ from campus to campus and are rarely published in one place.
Private and corporate scholarships
Indonesia has an active private scholarship sector alongside the government schemes. Long running programs such as Djarum Beasiswa Plus, the Tanoto Foundation's scholars program, and Bank Indonesia's scholarship for economics and finance students fund tuition and a monthly stipend for selected undergraduates, often with added leadership training or an internship track. These programs run their own yearly recruitment cycles and typically target students already enrolled and performing well academically, so check each foundation's page for the current year's criteria rather than assuming last year's terms still apply.
Some scholarships come from your own campus community rather than a national foundation: alumni associations, faculty-level donor funds, and company partnerships tied to a specific department are common at larger universities. These rarely advertise widely outside the campus, so ask your faculty advisor or student affairs office directly about what exists for your program.
How to apply and when
🎓 Confirm your university place first for KIP Kuliah and most private scholarships, since they attach to a confirmed enrollment.
📩 For LPDP, prepare your English test score and recommendation letters early, since both need to be recent when you submit.
⏱️ Track each program's own registration window. LPDP runs multiple batches a year, KIP Kuliah opens around the national admission cycle, and private foundations set their own separate calendars.
💵 Apply to more than one route where you qualify. A university fee reduction and a private stipend are not mutually exclusive with each other in most cases, though LPDP and KIP Kuliah have their own rules on stacking aid, so confirm with each program before combining them.
