Demand for these rooms runs far ahead of supply on the largest campuses. Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Cocody, Abidjan, was built for around 30,000 students but held close to 65,000 by 2015, according to university figures , which left most students looking for a room off campus.

The university opened a new campus at Bingerville in October 2025, adding capacity for about 15,000 more students and reducing some of the pressure on the main Cocody site. Even with this expansion, apply for on-campus housing as soon as registration opens, since rooms fill fast and go first to students who submit documents early.

Look for housing close to a transport route you can afford to use daily, since Abidjan's traffic and distances add real time and cost to a long commute. Group up with two or three classmates to split rent and utilities on a shared apartment, a common arrangement that cuts individual costs compared to renting alone.

Regional universities offer an easier housing market

Université Alassane Ouattara in Bouéké, Université Peleforo Gon Coulibaly in Korhogo, and Université Jean Lorougnon Guédé in Daloa serve smaller student populations than the Abidjan campuses, and rental competition in these towns runs lower. If a program is offered at both an Abidjan campus and a regional one, weigh the lower housing pressure and cost of living at the regional campus against the wider services available in Abidjan.
