Myanmar's Ministry of Education has run merit scholarships for top matriculation scorers heading abroad, and foreign governments such as the UK, Japan, and Germany also accept applications from Myanmar students through their own scholarship programs. Terms and even availability shift year to year, so confirm current rules on the official page before you apply.

Government scholarships inside Myanmar
Myanmar's Ministry of Education has run merit-based scholarship programs for students who score highly on the matriculation exam, historically requiring a mark of 500 or more for undergraduate study abroad, open to applicants aged 16 to 20. Graduate-level versions accept honours or postgraduate diploma holders for a funded master's, and master's graduates for a funded doctorate. The Irrawaddy covered the eligibility rules and selection process for this award. Program names and funding levels shift between administrations, so confirm the current program's status and requirements directly with the Ministry of Education before you plan around it.
University-level aid
Many public universities in Myanmar waive or reduce tuition for their top-ranked students each academic year, on top of the low base tuition most public programs already charge. This aid is usually awarded automatically based on your exam results or your standing at the end of each year, rather than through a separate application. Ask your faculty's academic office what its criteria are and when it announces awards.
Foreign government scholarships open to Myanmar applicants
A number of foreign governments run scholarships that accept applications from Myanmar nationals, usually covering tuition, a monthly stipend, and travel to and from the host country. These include the UK's Chevening Scholarship , Japan's MEXT scholarship through the Study in Japan portal, Germany's DAAD scholarships , and India's ICCR scholarships. Each runs its own separate application cycle, deadline, and eligibility list, and coverage changes year to year, so read the current cycle's page in full rather than relying on a previous year's terms.
Some destination-country programs paused or scaled back direct scholarship or exchange activity with Myanmar's state institutions after the political crisis that began in February 2021. Where a scholarship funds study at a specific Myanmar institution or requires a government endorsement, check the program's current country page for Myanmar-specific rules before you apply.

How to apply well
Confirm eligibility on the official page first. Aggregator sites and forwarded PDFs go out of date fast.
Prepare your matriculation and any degree transcripts early. Most scholarships want certified or notarised copies.
Budget time for English test scores, IELTS or an equivalent, where the scholarship requires one. Testing slots in Myanmar book out weeks ahead.
Apply to more than one route in parallel. Government, university, and foreign scholarships rarely share the same deadline, so a rejection from one does not close the others.
Where to start looking
Start with your own university's international office or academic affairs office. Staff there track which foreign scholarships have taken Myanmar students before and which ones respond fastest to applications. Cross check any scholarship you find against the funder's own website before you submit documents or pay a fee. Myanmar's scholarship space also attracts fraudulent listings that charge upfront "processing fees" real scholarships never ask for.
