TL;DR

Apply for a Saskatchewan student loan online through the Saskatchewan Student Service Centre (SSSC), submit your income, enrollment and banking details, and the assessment covers tuition, mandatory fees, books and a living allowance for your study period.

  • 📩 You apply online through the SSSC, the same integrated application that assesses your federal Canada Student Loan and Canada Student Grant eligibility.

  • 🎓 You need to be enrolled in an approved program at a designated post-secondary institution.

  • 💵 The assessment covers tuition and fees, books and supplies, and a living allowance, minus your income, savings and other resources.

  • ⏱️ Your institution confirms your enrollment to SSSC before any funding gets released.

Saskatchewan Student Service Centre: How to Apply for a Student Loan and What It Covers

Where You Apply

The Saskatchewan Student Service Centre (SSSC) runs the province's integrated student loan application. One application assesses you for both your federal Canada Student Loan and Canada Student Grant and your Saskatchewan Student Loan, so you do not fill out separate federal and provincial forms. You apply online through the Saskatchewan Student Service Centre .

Before You Start

Confirm you meet the basic eligibility rules before you open an application. You need Saskatchewan residency, acceptance into an approved program at a designated post-secondary institution, and enrollment at a qualifying course load for that program. Programs outside Saskatchewan qualify too, as long as the institution is designated for student aid purposes.

What to Have Ready

  • Your Social Insurance Number.

  • Banking details for direct deposit.

  • Your acceptance letter or proof of enrollment from your institution.

  • Income information for yourself, and for your parents or spouse if you apply as a dependent student.

  • Details of any scholarships, bursaries or other financial aid you already hold.

  • Your program's tuition and fee costs for the study period.

Submit your application before your program starts where you are able to. Processing takes time, and your institution has to confirm your enrollment before SSSC releases any funding, so applying early reduces the chance of a gap between your program start date and your first payment.

How SSSC Works Out What You Get

SSSC adds up your allowable costs for the study period, tuition and mandatory fees, required books and supplies, and a living allowance for rent, food and transportation, then subtracts your income, savings and other resources. What remains is your assessed need, which SSSC funds through a combination of the Canada Student Grant, Canada Student Loan and Saskatchewan Student Loan.

The assessment covers costs tied directly to your study period. It counts other aid you already receive, so report any outside scholarships or bursaries on your application rather than after the fact.

After You Submit

Your institution confirms your enrollment directly with SSSC once you register for classes. SSSC withholds funding until that confirmation is on file, even if your application is otherwise complete. Full-time students typically see funding disbursed near the start of each term the loan covers, either through your institution or by direct deposit depending on how your school handles it.

Repaying What You Borrow

The Canada Student Loan and Saskatchewan Student Loan portions are repayable. Repayment starts after your non-repayment period following the end of your studies, managed through the National Student Loans Service Centre . The Canada Student Grant portion of your package does not need to be repaid.

Reapplying Each Year

SSSC assesses you fresh for every study period, so submit a new application each academic year you need funding. Your income, your family's income and your program costs all shift your assessed need and what SSSC covers, even when your program itself stays the same.

If Something Changes Mid-Year

Tell SSSC directly if your income, your enrollment status or your family situation changes after you submit your application. A change in course load, a withdrawal from a class, or a new scholarship you receive partway through the term all affect your assessed need, and reporting the change quickly avoids an overpayment you would otherwise have to repay later.
