Cyprus State Scholarships

The Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation awards merit-based and merit-plus-need scholarships to Cypriot, EU and non-EU students studying at undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral level, in Cyprus or abroad. Awards run up to €3,000 a year for bachelor-level study and up to €4,000 a year at master's level, based on your exam results, according to the Ministry of Education's financial support page .

Applications run through the gov.cy portal and need a CY Login account, the government's secure digital identity system. For the round covered in the Cyprus Mail , applications opened in March with an April deadline. Deadlines shift a little each year, so check the gov.cy scholarship service page as soon as your academic year starts.

Erasmus+ funding for exchange students

If you come to Cyprus through an Erasmus+ exchange from your home university, you receive a separate EU mobility grant paid through your home institution, on top of any Cyprus-based scholarship you qualify for. Rates are set by each national Erasmus+ agency, so check with your home university's international office for the exact amount and payment schedule.

Student grants and allowances

Alongside the merit scholarship, Cyprus runs a separate, income-based Student Grant, paying between €750 and €3,420 a year depending on family income. This route needs at least 5 years of Cyprus residency, which limits it mainly to Cypriot families and long-term residents rather than students newly arrived from another European country.

A Student Allowance scheme adds up to €3,692 a year in needs-based support for living and study costs, on top of any grant or scholarship. Both schemes run through the same Ministry of Education financial support framework, so check eligibility for each one separately since the residency and income rules differ.

Support for Cypriot refugees

Cyprus offers a study loan scheme reserved for Cypriot refugees and their children, worth between €1,700 and €8,000 a year at 1.75 percent interest. This route does not apply to students from other European countries, but it explains why Cyprus lists a broader menu of aid programs than many smaller EU states.

University scholarships

Every major university in Cyprus, public and private, runs its own scholarship scheme on top of national aid. Common categories include entrance scholarships tied to your school-leaving grades, renewal scholarships tied to your GPA each year, and program-specific awards for fields the university wants to grow, such as STEM or health sciences. Amounts and rules differ by institution, so check the admissions or scholarships page of each university you apply to and compare offers before you commit to one.

Tuition waiver vs scholarship

Do not confuse the automatic tuition waiver on public bachelor programs for Cypriot and EU/EEA students with a scholarship. The waiver only cancels tuition, and pays nothing toward rent, food or books, so most students still apply for a grant, allowance or scholarship on top of it to cover living costs.

Where non-EU students stand

Non-EU students pay tuition at every level and do not qualify for the residency-based Student Grant or Student Allowance, both of which require years of Cyprus residency. The Cyprus State Scholarship stays open to non-EU applicants, so check its criteria closely, along with any scholarship offered directly by your target university, since these often give non-EU students their best route to reduced costs.

How to combine funding

Most students combine more than one source: a tuition waiver where it applies, a state scholarship or grant, and a university-level award. Nothing stops you applying to all of them at once, since eligibility rules run independently of each other. Apply as early as each program opens, since merit-based rounds close on a fixed date and late submissions do not get considered. Renewal scholarships usually require you to maintain a minimum GPA or pass a set number of credits each year, so check the renewal conditions before you count on multi-year funding.
