State stipends built into Czech public universities

Funding for students in Czechia comes from several separate layers rather than one central system: automatic university stipends, targeted government scholarships for specific nationalities, and EU-wide mobility programs open to most European students. Knowing which layer fits your situation saves you from missing money you already qualify for.

Once you are enrolled, Czech public universities pay two kinds of statutory stipend directly to eligible students, funded through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Czechia does not run a national student loan scheme the way some other European countries do, so this stipend system, alongside program-specific scholarships, is the core of state support.

The social scholarship (sociální stipendium) is means-tested and only goes to students whose family already qualifies for Czech state social support, such as the child allowance. Its monthly amount is set by law as one quarter of the minimum wage, rounded up. At Charles University this works out to 7,280 CZK a month for the 2025-26 academic year, according to the university's social scholarship page .

The accommodation scholarship (ubytovací stipendium) helps cover housing costs for full-time students who live away from their permanent address during the standard length of their program. Amounts vary by institution, since each rector sets the rate, but at Charles University it comes to around 750 CZK a month, paid out roughly every three months, according to the university's accommodation scholarship page .

Government scholarships for students from partner countries

Czechia's Ministry of Education, jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, runs government scholarships within its Foreign Development Cooperation program for students from a fixed list of eligible countries, which currently includes Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia among students in scope for a European audience, according to MŠMT .

The scholarship covers either a one-year Czech language and preparatory course followed by a Czech-taught follow-up Master's program, or direct entry into a Master's or Doctoral program taught in English. You apply through your national Czech embassy rather than directly through a university. For the 2026-27 academic year, the application window opened on July 20, 2025 and closed on September 30, 2025, and this July-to-September pattern repeats for each following intake, so watch your embassy's page for the next opening.

EU-wide and regional funding

Regional and bilateral scholarships

The South Moravian Centre for International Mobility funds non-EU students starting a follow-up Master's or Doctoral program at universities in the Brno region, covering the first year of study, according to the JCMM scholarships page . Austrian students and researchers can also apply through Aktion Czech Republic-Austria, a bilateral program funding stays of one to five months, run by the Czech National Agency for International Education .

Combining funding sources

Nothing stops you from applying to more than one scheme at once, since they come from different budgets and different administering bodies. A common combination is a Czech-taught free public program plus the accommodation and social scholarships from your own university, topped up with a regional scheme like the South Moravian Centre if your field and city qualify. Read each scheme's own rules carefully though, since some, like the government scholarship for partner countries, explicitly exclude students who already hold Czech or EU citizenship or permanent residence.
