Luxembourg's state financial aid pays eligible students a base grant of 1,289 euros a semester, plus extra grants for mobility, family size and household income. Apply through MyGuichet between 1 August and 30 November for winter semester, or 1 February and 31 May for summer semester.

Who runs Luxembourg's student financial aid
The Service des aides financières pour études supérieures, under the Ministry of Research and Higher Education (MESR), manages state grants and loans for higher education students. You apply through the MyGuichet online platform, and the service runs a calculator that estimates your personal amount before you apply, according to guichet.public.lu .
Who qualifies
Two groups can apply.
Residents: Luxembourg citizens, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens with at least three months of residence rights, long-term residents, and beneficiaries of international protection
Non-residents: workers employed in Luxembourg, or children of workers employed in Luxembourg, who meet a minimum cumulative employment period, generally five years
The second route matters if you grew up as the child of a cross-border worker commuting into Luxembourg. You qualify for aid without living in the country yourself.
Grant and loan amounts for 2026-27
The aid package combines several components that add together, according to Studenteguide , Luxembourg's national youth information service.

On top of the grants, you can add a state-backed student loan of 3,250 euros a semester full-time or 1,625 euros a semester part-time. Interest is capped at 1.8%, and repayment starts two years after you finish studying, spread over 10 years.
How much you could receive
Add the components together and a student with the maximum mobility, social and family grants could reach close to 5,800 euros a semester before loans. Few students qualify for every add-on at the same time, since the social criteria grant depends on household income and the family grant only applies when siblings study together. Run your own numbers through the official calculator before you apply, since it accounts for your specific household situation.

A rental contract or proof of address if you claim the mobility grant
Submit everything through MyGuichet alongside your application form. A missing document delays your file and can push your first payment past the start of the semester.
Where you study does not have to be Luxembourg
Luxembourg residents can use this aid to study anywhere in the EU, not only at Uni.lu. If you live in Luxembourg but choose a bachelor's or master's program in another European country, you keep access to the base grant and add the mobility grant once you pay rent abroad for at least two consecutive months. State aid follows the student, not the university, which matters since Uni.lu alone cannot cover every field of study.
PhD funding works differently
Doctoral candidates rarely use the student grant system above. Most fund a PhD through self-financing, third-party research funding, research training grants, or direct employment by the University of Luxembourg. Uni.lu-employed doctoral candidates work full-time as staff, with automatic health cover through the national health fund, according to Eurydice .
What state aid does not cover
Luxembourg does not run many named merit scholarships beyond state aid, since one public university serves almost all students. Check your program's own page for faculty-level research grants and mobility funding tied to exchange periods, and treat state financial aid as your main funding route rather than one option among several.
You reapply every year
State aid is not automatic once granted. You submit a new application each academic year, and your amount can change if your household income, mobility status or program changes.
