TL;DR

Spain's national becas MEC scheme for 2026-27 opened applications on 7 April 2026 and closed 18 May 2026, with a fixed grant of 1,700 euros for low income plus 2,700 euros if you must relocate to study, on top of free tuition for eligible students. These national grants mainly suit families already tax-resident in Spain, so newly arrived European students should also check university and regional aid.

  • 💶 Income threshold 1: 8,843-36,255 euros a year, depending on family size

  • 💶 Fixed income-linked amount: 1,700 euros

  • 🏠 Fixed residence amount: 2,700 euros if you move away from home to study

  • ⏱️ 2026-27 national application window: 7 April - 18 May 2026

  • 🎓 Universities and autonomous communities run separate scholarship schemes on top of the national one

Scholarships and Student Financial Aid in Spain

The national becas MEC scheme

The Ministerio de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deportes runs Spain's main student grant scheme, known as becas MEC, covering students from primary school through university. For the 2026-27 cycle, the application window ran from 7 April 2026 at 8:00 to 18 May 2026 at 15:00 peninsular time, according to a La Moncloa press release . The government set aside 2,559 million euros for the cycle, reaching about one million students across all education levels.

The rules for the cycle come from Real Decreto 179/2026, published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado , which sets the income thresholds and grant amounts each year.

Income thresholds

Eligibility runs on three income thresholds, based on total family income and family size. Each threshold you stay under gives you access to a different set of grant components.

ThresholdIncome range (1 to 8 family members)Gives access to
Threshold 18,843-36,255 euros, +3,536 per extra memberIncome amount, residence amount, academic excellence, variable amount, tuition coverage
Threshold 213,898-52,850 euros, +3,340 per extra memberResidence amount, basic grant, academic excellence, variable amount, tuition coverage
Threshold 314,818-56,348 euros, +3,561 per extra memberAcademic excellence and tuition coverage only

Grant amounts

On top of tuition coverage, becas MEC pays fixed and variable amounts depending on your situation:

  • 💶 Income-linked fixed amount: 1,700 euros for students under threshold 1

  • 🏠 Residence amount: 2,700 euros if you need to relocate away from your family home to study

  • Academic excellence amount: 50-125 euros, based on your grade average

  • Basic grant for non-university studies: 300 euros, 350 euros for Basic Vocational Training cycles

  • Variable amount: at least 60 euros, calculated from the remaining budget, family income and academic record

Who qualifies for it

Becas MEC assesses your family's income through your Spanish tax return, so the scheme works best for students, or families, already tax-resident in Spain. If you move to Spain from another European country specifically to start a degree, your family may not have a Spanish tax record yet, which usually rules out this national scheme for your first year. Check the residency requirement for your specific case on the official becas y ayudas portal before you count on this funding.

University and regional scholarships

Individual universities run their own becas propias, covering need, merit, sports achievement or mobility between campuses. Check the financial aid or becas section of your target university's website before you enroll, since terms and amounts differ by institution and by year.

Autonomous communities also run supplementary aid programs on top of the national scheme, aimed at students studying within their region. These regional grants have their own separate application windows and criteria, so check your target region's education department alongside the national portal.

Look specifically for mobility or newcomer grants aimed at students moving into the region from elsewhere, since some communities run these alongside their standard need-based aid. A short email to your target university's international office asking what applies to your situation often surfaces options that do not show up in a general search.

What tuition coverage actually means

The tuition coverage component pays your university directly for the public credit price you would otherwise owe, so if you only qualify under threshold 3, the grant still removes your tuition bill even without a cash payment. Applying is worth it even if you expect to fall in the highest income band, since tuition coverage alone can save you the full annual credit cost calculated in our tuition and living costs guide.

Payment timing and what to do if you are refused

Grant payments arrive in installments once the ministry processes and confirms your file, so expect a gap of several months between your application and your first payment. Check the current payment calendar on the becas portal each year, since it is not fixed to the same dates every cycle. If your application is refused, you can file a recurso de reposición (an administrative appeal) within the deadline stated on your refusal notice, so a first rejection does not automatically end your case.

Funding if you come through an exchange

If you move to Spain through Erasmus+ or another university partnership rather than enrolling directly, your funding runs through your home university's international office, not the Spanish becas MEC system. Confirm your Erasmus+ grant amount and payment schedule with your home institution before you travel.

How to apply

  • Gather your family's Spanish income tax documents, if applicable, and your academic records

  • Register and apply through the official becas portal within the annual application window

  • Submit before the deadline, since late applications are not accepted

  • Track your application status online and respond quickly to any request for extra documents

Plan around more than one funding source

Few students cover their full cost of living from one scholarship alone. Combine what you can access: national tuition coverage if you qualify, a university's own merit or need-based grant, and any regional aid your target autonomous community runs, then treat the total as your realistic funding picture rather than relying on a single application succeeding.
