TL;DR

Egyptian students apply to US schools with their Thanaweya Amma or A-Level record, get an I-20 after admission, then complete the F-1 visa process at the US Embassy in Cairo before total cost and timeline fall into place.

  • 🎓 Graduate programs and some undergraduate programs need a NACES member credential evaluation of your Egyptian transcript.

  • ⏱️ Start 12-18 months ahead, since tests, applications, admission, and the visa step each take real time.

  • 💵 Total cost varies widely by school type. Pull the exact Cost of Attendance figure from each school rather than trust one national average.

  • 🛂 The F-1 visa runs through five steps: SEVIS fee, DS-160, visa fee, Cairo interview, then entry up to 30 days before your program starts.

How your Egyptian qualifications map to US admission

US undergraduate programs accept the Thanaweya Amma (Egyptian General Secondary Education Certificate), the IGCSE and A-Level track, and the IB diploma. Admissions officers read your Egyptian transcript directly for most applications, but graduate programs and some undergraduate programs ask for a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member evaluator before they register your Egyptian degree against a US GPA scale.

Order your evaluation early. Evaluators need your official transcripts sent directly from your Egyptian school or university, and processing after they receive your documents commonly runs several weeks, longer during peak application season from December through February.

Standardized tests and English proficiency

Many US universities dropped SAT or ACT requirements for undergraduate admission after 2020. Testing policy still varies by school and keeps changing, so check each target school's current testing policy on its admissions page rather than assume it is test-optional.

Graduate programs vary by field. Many master's and PhD programs in engineering, business, and the sciences still require the GRE or GMAT, while others waived it. You also need an English proficiency score unless you completed a full degree taught in English. TOEFL, IELTS, and the Duolingo English Test all run testing sessions in Cairo, and AMIDEAST hosts official TOEFL sessions across Egypt.

Building your application timeline

StageWhen to startWhat you need
School research and test prep12-18 months before you startShortlist, test registration, credential evaluation order
Applications6-9 months beforeTranscripts, test scores, essays, recommendation letters, Common App or school portal
Admission and I-203-5 months beforeAcceptance letter, financial evidence, I-20 form from the school
Visa2-4 months beforeSEVIS fee, DS-160, visa interview in Cairo

Most US undergraduate programs use the Common App , which lets you apply to several member schools from one profile. Graduate programs almost always run their own separate application portal per university.

Choosing the right US school and location

Community colleges, regional public universities, flagship public universities, and private research universities all accept international students, but they differ sharply in cost, class size, and the level of individual support you get as a new arrival. A community college near a city with an established Egyptian or Arab community eases the adjustment during your first year, while a large flagship state university often gives access to bigger scholarship budgets and stronger name recognition abroad.

Check each school's designation as SEVP-certified before you apply, since only SEVP-certified schools are authorized to issue the I-20 you need for an F-1 visa. The Study in the States school search lists certified schools by state and program level.

Realistic cost of a US degree

Total cost swings widely by school type. Public university out-of-state and international tuition, private university tuition, community college tuition, room and board, health insurance, and books all add up differently at each school, so treat any single national average number with caution. Pull the exact current Cost of Attendance figure from each target school's financial aid page, and cross-check it against the NCES College Navigator , the US government's free tool for comparing published tuition and fees across accredited schools.

Budget beyond tuition too. You need the SEVIS fee, the US visa application fee, a flight, a laptop, health insurance if the school does not bundle it into tuition, and settling-in costs for your first month before any stipend or aid disbursement arrives. A community college route, where you complete two years at lower cost before transferring into a four-year university, cuts the total bill substantially for many Egyptian students without lowering the value of the eventual degree.

Plan your budget in US dollars, then convert at the exchange rate your bank uses when you actually transfer funds, not an old or approximate rate. Egyptian pound to dollar transfers often carry bank fees and rate spreads on top of the listed exchange rate, so confirm the total cost of a transfer with your bank or transfer service before you commit funds to a deposit or first tuition payment.

The F-1 student visa process from Egypt

Once a SEVP-certified school admits you and confirms your funding, it issues your Form I-20. From that point, the process runs in a fixed order.

  1. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee tied to your I-20 record, using the fee amount and payment method listed on ICE's SEVIS fee page .

  2. Complete the DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application and print the confirmation page.

  3. Pay the US visa application (MRV) fee at the rate published on travel.state.gov .

  4. Schedule your F-1 interview at the US Embassy in Cairo and check current appointment wait times on the embassy's visa page before you book, since wait times move throughout the year.

  5. Attend the interview with your passport, I-20, SEVIS fee receipt, DS-160 confirmation, admission letter, academic records, and financial evidence covering at least your first year of study.

Visa policy for F-1 applicants has shifted more than once since 2025, including changes to interview scheduling and additional screening steps at some posts. Confirm current requirements on the embassy's own page and on travel.state.gov shortly before your appointment, since a rule that applied last year may not apply now.

What to do after your visa is approved

Enter the US up to 30 days before the program start date printed on your I-20. Report to your school's international student office within the window it specifies, usually during orientation week, so staff register your SEVIS record. Keep your I-20, visa, and passport together during travel, and carry a printed copy of your admission and funding documents in your hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
